In our school they'd get you in the habit of writing them ASAP, so that a) you'd be better able to write them by the time the exams roll around and b) there'd be a good chance that you'd have written a similar essay to one of those asked for in the exam, and thus have an easier time of it - particularly if you'd spent too long on the first part and were short of essay-writing time.
