She told me once how she went to a "New business ideas" meeting in our town. Her business idea was to have a machine that picked up sand out of peoples gardens on the coast and put it back on the beach. At this point, the alarm bell in my head started ringing. We made it full circle on the walk and decided to extend the date to dinner, so I drive her to a nice restaurant and we have dinner. She seemed quite jumpy, and there was something I couldn't really pin down. At times she looked nervous, not a normal first date nervous but almost a physically scared nervous. She kept looking around like she was expecting to see something.
We finished the dinner date and against my better judgement I decided to bring her back to my house. As I went in for the first kiss, we kissed for about 5 seconds and she started giggling. I let her calm down and tried again, cue more giggling (incidentally this really annoys me, I'm 24 not 6 in the school playground).
I give up on the kissing as a bad job and figure maybe she is nervous. We talk, this progresses onto a conversation about life. To be honest we talked for about an hour about completely random shit. I could tell she was eclectic, which is not necessarily a bad thing but something wasn't right with her. I was detecting a certain level of what I call "the crazy". That's when she came out with it. She started off by telling me that there is something she'd been keeping from me, but she had to tell me or we would get no where. My internal alarm bell is ringing at full pelt now, I mentally prepare myself and my relevant responses for her being pregnant or having three kids waiting at home or something equally big. I was not on the ball, not even close to it.
Clare sat there and told me that she sees Velociraptors. She goes on to tell me that they are everywhere, they are hiding in wait for her, specifically so they could eat her. She told me that there is one that lives in the bush in her garden at home and she doesn't sleep well because it stares at her. It comes onto the grass in her garden and stares at her. She sits up and watches it out the window. She goes on to tell me that she is seeing a psychiatrist for this but they still don't believe her. I am sat there in absolute shock and I'm completely dumbfounded. I don't even know what to say, what can you say to a comment like that? When my brain finally kicked into gear it called a Level 1 abort, which in my mind is a GET THE FUCK OUT code. I had to play this the right way though, this woman knows where I live and now I look at it from this outside perspective she is exactly the type to be a bunny boiling stalker. I appeared sympathetic at first, offering her a hug and telling her how it must have been hard to go through that. About ten minutes later I called tiredness and told her I was going to call it a night and that I should take her home. We drive back to her house and I pull up. She turns and looks at me and with an unparalleled sadness in her face says "I'm not going to see you again, am I?". I was debating on whether to bullshit or not, but I thought it was best to be honest. I told her that no she wouldn't. She then said something I didn't expect. "Can I still have a goodnight kiss?". I felt sorry for her so I gave her a small peck on the cheek and said goodnight. She got out the car and went into her house.
I sat there for about a minute in absolute silence trying to rationalise what had just happened in the last hour. I turned my car round and drove to the end of the street. At the end of the street it hit me; I started laughing. It wouldn't stop. I laughed for the entire 20 minute drive home. I laughed so hard that I got a stitch in my side. My colleagues and friends thought the story was quite amusing, she even had a domain named after her at work "raptor.local". To this day I will never look at a raptor (On TV) in the same way again. | |
