Aye, that's what this section is for, though this guy seems to be saying that he's not really a promoter and doesn't have the time or the inclination to actually be an active member - which makes his posts even more likely to be interpreted as spam. Since promoters are welcome to come here and only post promotional stuff I'm not entirely sure why Scapegoat has a problem with it, though I can see that the original poster's rather "fuck you and your myspace links in your sigs" attitude didn't really help matters - and as a result some people may associate this thread with your band when they next hear the name.

Perhaps the OP doesn't realise that people, bands and promoters who only join forums to post adverts generally aren't very well accepted, unlike the ones who spread information and are willing to join in with a follow up discussion.

Anyway, I like The Wonder Stuff so I'll check out the link tomorrow.

Hi, and welcome to AltNation.

I guess the reason for the throat-jumping-down is that

Quote:
it's just an item of news
is only partly true... unless you consider what happens half-way through programs on ITV to be "news" about what shampoos are available.

If you merely want to advertise, we can accommodate that. If anything we'd rather welcome you on board though as a regular poster/contributor/talker of general shite etc etc.

A wee "hello" and something a bit more seemingly friendly/personal than what feels like having a flyer glued to you forehead would suit the haters in this thread better but more importantly to you, would likely do the job of promoting your music better, I'd think.

Anyhow, this site has discussion of music at its core, so welcome and hope to see you around.

Seriously though, someone should explain to these guys that no one other than Scapegoat really cares if they post once or fifty times before promoting their band.

I think the indignation on all sides is both unnecessary and mildly amusing.

At some point or other any of you might find your self hooking with a number of agents, promoters, etc - to be honest to get UK airplay they're essential.

btw - you've got to forgive me - beginning of Easter holiday - quite pissed - just seen a horror on DVD called 'Children' - dead good - must see!
He also keeps ignoring any polite questions (We will seemingly never know where the copy originates, nor what Neil Young's LWWT is.) its like he's blind to everything except potential criticism.

As I said right at the start, if you just C+P impersonal advertising copy from forum to forum, people on discussion forums are going to interpret it as spam.

I just hate it when people lie about being street teamers / advertising types.

Note - I asked him a question in my first post.
After that, it descended into bullshit.

Got no problem with promoters promoting in the right places if they admit it, but it does my tits in when folk sign up and try the old "Hey, I'm in no way connected to this band, their management, their label or their street team! I just love copying and pasting the same info across loads of internet forums for the fun of it! I don't like replying to any further questions about the news items I post, though..."

We're being comparitively polite about it too, compared to other forums.

Actually no - I don't know this Nicholas from Adam.

Everyone on this thread knows who I am - I'm one of the band members who saw our name being talked about - and dropped in concerned about the bad vibes brewing. (though quite honestly I like joining these kinds of forums anyway).

Let me explain what's happened here - when we release something we send stuff out to half a dozen promoters, etc to plug our CDs to radio, do press releases, etc. There's no mal intent or abuse intended - there's not even a profit motive as we never make any money (we must be nuts) - we're only on iTunes because a lot of radio requires a UPC - and anybody can hear everything we do as free last.fm streams anyway.

I can understand people getting annoyed by spamming - especially if you have a sense of ownership about the board - but in isolation this was just an agnostic item of news about an unsigned indie band who releases music for fun.

Anyway in the eyes of some here our name is now mud - I can't see a happy closure to this thread - that's life I guess - I'm not adding anymore to this thread.

BTW - Happy Easter Everyone

Mate - If you two are different people, then you didn't spam the forums, your record company ( Street team, or whoever ) did.

You were upfront about who you were - And like I said before, that's fine.
If someone says "I have a band. Please listen to my music", then chances are I will.
That's why the forums are there, after all!

It's when the PR bullshit starts that folk start to get annoyed.
Universal Music used to be bloody awful for it, paying interns to pretend to be real forum users and claim that they'd "just found" a new band... You know the script.

Its the promoters you are sending stuff to that are to blame then. It wasn't in isolation either, every post by this bloke has either been ad copy or snidey comments trying to justify that the majority of his posts are ad copy.

Though the fact that you're now here attempting to justify his behaviour does make it look worse on you guys, as you can't exactly say that you're taking no part in the promotional side of things at this point.

I'll just print screen this one with your sig line as the irony's killing me.

My attempt at bad vibes management has failed - I'm off to other threads.

Good call. Its a hard position to be in, as obviously you feel obliged to defend the spammer advertising your band, but if the promoter you're employing's idea of promotion is to employ people to spam chat forums then you might want to think about changing promoters.

At least people here are being polite about it.

No irony there at all, he really is bizarre. And most people here who have a myspace link in their sig are active members of the board, perhaps you should make a snazzy Shoosh sig since you're now an active member too, the C&P guy is just a bit of a member.

Lots of promoters do exactly the same thing as him on channels and forum sections clearly headed promoters and news.
It's not as though he and us have conspired in an evil plan to spam the world - we just gave a guy who does press releases a press release.

And I'm sorry if I'm still a little bemused about the ire its drawn.

Why not have a special section of the forum called 'Filthy evil promoters spam your shit here' - then everyone can be cool about it.
