I recommend:
'The Maggot' by Melvins.
This is one of the most ridiculous over-the-top things i've ever heard. It's like regular metal meets the melvins usual "don't care" ethos, with loads of distorted everything. It's super-super heavy. I read king buzzo saying about this record "if something's worth doing, it's worth overdoing". And not many bands have a King for their singer. Amazing! Try it.

While i'm listening to them and thinking about them, the thing about the Melvins is there's kind of a big secret to them, and this is it:
You know all the shit Melvins records, the nonsense, hour-of-noise ones, the hitting pans together ones, the fake remix ones, all the really bad records? They're all fucking amazing.
That's the secret.

The Melvins ARE metal even though they try and deny it. They fuckin are.

And they are one of the best around. One of my favorite bands. And i would say their first album "Gluey Porch Treatments" is my favorite, With Matt Lukin from Mudhoney on bass, released in 86. It a lot faster and tech than some of their other d00m orientated records.


Right now I really REALLY think Mastodon are the best Metal band on the planet. I would go as far as to say they are the best Metal band to come about since the 80's h34r:

They really are incredible. I love Neurosis to and Tool. They are about the best around at the moment. And I think Decapitated are pretty special.

There is loads of shit I loved from the 90's but a lot of it is a bit meh on reflection. Like Pantera, Machine Head and Sepultura. All good though. Just not amazing. Carcass are obviously about as good as metal gets. And i love early Napalm Death. And Entombed rule but they only got one good album. "Wolverine Blues" of course
