Places like the BBC (for an example, feel free to edit in your own) are largely staffed by people with English Lit, History, Fine Art (/etc) degrees. The specific knowledge you learn in the vast majority of arts or social science degree’s is irrelevant once you’ve sat that final exam. Half the time decent grade from a good university effectively says little more than “I’m a relatively intelligent person”. Right or wrong that just kind of life.

Education in this country kind of has a drop you in it approach post University. You’re passed from standard grades to highers to advance highers to higher education. Then all of a sudden the cord if cut and you’re left flapping around. Hence why you often find the person pulling your pint in the pub has a masters in X, Y or Z. Career Services in University’s are often fucking beastly; it’s there for you to use and abuse as much as you possibly can. Getting work experience on the side (lets face it, classes never take up that much of your time) is also amazing for getting a feel for something before committing yourself to it in any proper terms. Proactiveness is my word of the day here, especially since Microsoft Word is telling me it’s not actually a word.

The civil service grad programme is full of people who did English/History/Geology/Business studies/Sociology because that's the kind of work that they're good at - taking lots of information and writing a coherent point out of it all.

first person who came to speak at uni from IBM was a systems analyst and had a degree in french and linguistics. most major organisations have grad programmes that accept people from all degree disciplines. you'd be surprised if you took a look.
