Re: Plants

Water it when it looks like it's going to dry out, and when it drops its flowers trim it right down to the roots. It's not failed yet

That's a good sign, don't worry. Don't water it too often (once/twice a week is enough) and check the leaves to see whether it's getting enough sunlight. If the leaves are dark emeraldy green, move it to a sunnier spot. If the leaves are a yellowy brown, move it to a shadier spot. You're aiming for a nice light-grass colour. The stalks can take 3-6 months to become blooms so don't cut them off!

Re: Plants

Trimming! That's what I'm doing wrong, I wanted to but SOMEONE told me that was bad. idiot. Ermm also guys, the orchid man told me not to water it the traditional way, you're supposed to steep the roots for 5minutes once a week?

ps. when the instructions for care on a plant say 'mist leaves regularly' is it ok to adapt that to pouring water all over the leaves/floor?

Re: Plants

I sit mine in a saucer of water and top it up when I notice (which is usually about once a week, admittedly). It also sits on a window ledge of an East facing window, so it gets a decent amount of sunlight.

Yeah that'll be fine. Have you got a carpet? If so, sprinkle the damp area with cress seeds and not only will you have watered your orchid but you'll have a tasty accompaniment for your eggs.

P.S. Don't listen to Bukkake. Everyone knows she's a PEOPLE doctor, not a PLANT doctor.

They'll grow indoors. Bob grew one the summer we moved from a flat to a house, in flourished in the kitchen window and we got maybe half a dozen chilli peppers from it. We put it in the garden when we got here and it died a death.
