| Re: Savings? I have a savings account which has a bit in it and have only recently been using it to save for my holiday. I do TRY put away about £50 a month for a rainy day generally, but if I don't put it away on the very same day I get paid, it never will. That happens too often. |

In addition though, I have money going into a pension and money in a couple of sharesave schemes. I have what Sam describes as the short and medium term savings, but I have a mortgage as well. I also tend to put away at least half my yearly bonus into savings and spend the other half. To my mind, there if no point in saving so much you never have any extra for clothes/beer/holidays etc and I don't like to do any kind of monthly budget for these as that just seems to take away some of the enjoyment of just spending sometimes.

| Re: Savings? I'm not really saving just now in anyway meaningful way. I always have in the past though and will go back to it soon.
My current savings are in an ISA and a cautious shares fund. They'll be going to a mortgage eventually unless I go wild and decide to live off them for a year and spend my time travelling or some shit (which is highly unlikely)

| Re: Savings? I'm quite surprised so many people here have a regular savings plan. The vast majority of people I speak to in person about this stuff not only save nothing but generally owe huge amounts on their credit cards.

| Re: Savings? Emergency funds are also brilliant things - when you're suddenly getting pumped for a massive repair bill or something you can relax, knowing you've got the cash just sitting there exactly for this sort of problem Massive psychological boost that.

| Re: Savings? I have a small amount of rainy day savings, to cover unexpected household expenses (new fridge, new oven et.c.) and I do put money aside each week to cover bills when they come in, otherwise I'd spend it all and be rooked at the end of each month!
However, I don't have any long term savings plan, right now paying the mortgage is far more important. For the next few years, I'd rather overpay that than have large savings.
