So fat people are allowed to lose weight and skinny people aren't.

Right.

More 'everyone's allowed, but some have rather questionable reasons for doing so and probably shouldn't'.

and what about when you get to a size 8? What happens then?

What's the difference in how happy you'll be at a 10 in all shops as opposed to a size 8?

I'm not trying to be horrible, I genuinely don't understand, sorry.

Right.
nah, not at all, I just understand the reasoning behind saying "I want to be more toned", "I would like to be a healthier weight" or, "I'd like to lose a little bit off my thighs" etc as opposed to picking a target that's a dress size. The statements above tend to come from folk who are happy with themselves already in a general sense but want to lose a little off a certain area and will stop when said target is achieved regardless of dress size.

Dress size is just a number. A size 8 on one girl might look brilliant, but awful on another.

You keep going down sizes, because being severely underweight doesn't make you happy it makes you depressed and neurotic.

Take it from one who knows...told myself i'd be happy "if I could just get down to a size 12", two years later I was a size 6, 7 and a half stone wreck. Not pretty, but surprisingly easy to get obesessed with once you start.

Surely there has to be a way to explain that opinion without being such a cunt about it. Some of the shock expressed in this thread is so fake its unreal: "Oh my god!!! Teenage girls want to be unhealthily thin!!!"

Re: The all-new, all-singing, all-dancing two stone for whenever thread.

It's one thing to hear about it, it's another when you are actually in contact with someone planning to do it. And I, personally, have always been shocked at the attitudes people have towards their bodies and the culture supporting it. I don't see it as 'perfectly normal' and I refuse to treat it as acceptable because it's not how it should be.

Re: The all-new, all-singing, all-dancing two stone for whenever thread.

I didn't realise that just because something stupid or dangerous is common we should condone it when in direct contact with it. Obviously I'm just naive. Also, the blatant obtuseness of some of these posts amuses me - advising a perfectly healthy teenager not to lose 3st to become severely underweight can now be summed up as "So fat people are allowed to lose weight and skinny people aren't."... nice.

I'll admit I was blunt to the point of maybe overly harsh, but I'm not going to mollycoddle a perfectly intelligent user who is saying she's going to do something stupid to the point of life-threatening. And no, I'm not being overdramatic - anorexia induced malnutrition (and I'm not saying she has anorexia, but if she's going to diet to that extreme it will have the same physiological effects on her body) has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness... approximately 10%. That's not something to sniff at.

I know this is *slightly* hypocritical as I'm a bit of a weirdo with weightloss as well, but I totally agree. I recently studied a pro-ana community as part of my course, and it seems there's a fair amount of folk whose eating disorders were triggered by what started out as a straightforward diet. So (especially taking the ultra low goal weight into account) I don't think Vicki/Vicky(? sorry!) is being over the top at all.

Lose a few pounds, fair enough, but get that ridiculous target weight to fuck.

No-ones saying you should condone irresonsible behaviour, but the faux-shock was comedy.

I don't think anyone (apart from maybe Christie) has an issue with the points being raised, I think it's more the hostile tone that's being bandied about. I understand trying to point the girl in a healthier direction and trying to help her improve her body image. I do not understand alienating her by calling her 'fucking idiotic' and being downright rude - that's not the opposite of mollycoddling however you look at it.

You and your friends should probably go and get some professional mental help over this because, seriously, that does not sound healthy.

I gave in to buying a bigger size, and am planning on getting a really pretty dress from monsoon - and i look great in them! I thought if i gave in to buying size 20 trousers (its weird, i can wear skirts as small as 16, nuts in sizing!) then i would get bigger, say 'oh well, size 22...etc' etc. Then i remembered i have varying sizing of clothes.

It is a shame that shops like morgan and topshop have some clothes that are quite small sized and people MAY feel that this dictates their body shape/size.

Ive put on chub, but i dont have the motivation or the want to lose it right now. Im kinda comfy, although i know the extra tyre aint so healthy, im not eating chips every day and doing bugger all exercise; its just not my time....*reaches for the turkish delight*

Its a strong emotion conveyed because she feels so strongly and her and cares about her state of health; rather than getting upset, she got angry. And i dont think she's meaning to be offensive, she's meaning to give Christie a verbal kick up the arse in the right direction.

Im being an observer here, im not saying either way what she should do.

I wasn't aiming my comment specifically at Bikuki, it just so happens her particular comments were the most effective examples of what I was referring to. I get that no-one wants to see Christie make herself ill but the 'verbal kick up the arse' approach is more likely to make her think "well fuck you" and disregard everything being said. I'm simply trying to convey that perhaps there is a more effective approach.
