| One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... colposcopy?!?! Ok, so im probably panicking for nothing and making a big deal for nothing. But come on? It's basically fanny gazing and they get to take a momento of the exhilerating experience, i.e.a wee biopsy to test aswell.
Meh. Yes, i probably just needed to rant about this, but ive never had a follow-up or problem with prior smear tests. And mother had to have a hysterectomy in her early 30's because she had cancerous cells in her womb. SO im feeling a little paranoid.
Anyone ever had this or similar types of test? I hate being female - then again, guys dont get it much better with prostate checks and the jap's eye swabs!

Abnormal results are fairly common because of something called the 'transformation zone' around the cervix which can produce bizarre cells, many of which are sloughed off or caught early and dealt with due to those lovely people prodding you with a speculum every 3 years. Did any women in your family other than your mother have similar cancer? If not, it may not be a genetic thing - your mum may just have been unlucky.
Secondly, I haven't had one (I haven't had a smear test at all yet, ought to get round to arranging one really), but I'd wager it's going to be a bit uncomfortable. Relax, try not to kick the gynaecologist (also, let them know if it becomes painful so they can stop and alter what they're doing, as I'm pretty sure its not meant to be more than 'uncomfortable' and suddenly tensing up due to pain will make things harder for you and them), and remember that if there IS anything wrong, they're likely catching it early (cervical cancer is quite slow progressing and generally gets caught really early due to the screening programme) and you'll almost certainly come to no harm. |

| Re: One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... Well im in the exact same boat as you missy, I have mine next week, so freaking out slightly as well. I know people in my familt who have went through the same thing and the docs have caught irregular cells early, but they need to go back every year or so to see if they grow back. Its not as crazy or huge as you may think, but I totaly understand that your imagination is going crazy with 'what if's'
Good luck

| Re: One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... I've had one, it was horrific.
I should state now that I'm clearly in a minority, my mum, mother in law and various friends have all had one and been fine. I however fainted around the point they put the second injection of local anaesthetic in my cervix and had to be referred for a general at the hospital.
Basically, it's the same as a smear test, but they apply a local to numb the area, then remove the cells for testing. They remove all the cells, so they test is also the treatment. I had horrifically painful womb contractions, and eventually passed out, but like i say, I'm in a minority. I can safely say it was the worst pain I've ever experienced in my life.
After the op, I had very strong period pains and a lot of bleeding for a couple of days, and also caught an infection. So all in all, mine didn't go to well, but I think I'm an extreme example!

| Re: One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... Your experience of a colposcopy really depends why they are bringing you in for a second look.
A colposcopy is literally looking at your cervix with a colposcope; basically a special microscope. Pink Punk had a 'see and treat' appointment I think, whereas my first appointment was really just to have a better nosey. My first appointment was fine, no more uncomfortable than getting a smear done. Getting treatment is sore, though thankfully mine wasn't as bad as Pink Punk's because that sounds awful!

| Re: One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... I had a camera + tube + pumping water up my jappy once. Much worse, unless you have a particularly tiny vagina.
I should stress this was a medical thing, not a drug-fuelled gay thing.

| Re: One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... See, ive always been rather gallus about my smear tests and gone 'mwahahaha - i have a fabulous vagina, bow in it's presence' - i know, total wtf attitude but it made it easier. But now, THIS!
I mean, its happening very quickly. And i do NOT want ANY anaesthetic - i would rather they did it without, i am NOT having a syringe anywhere NEAR my vagina or cervix, bad enough in my arm or mouth!
If it's just a 10 minute nosey, fine. if they do find abnormal cells, im going to refuse any injections! Yes, chilidish attitude but wait and see i suppose. Thanks folk, i just needed to vent really and see if there were any similar experiences.
And Jen/Posh - jeeezo!

It not that bad although it is unpleasant. I would maybe bring a friend with you incase you need a cuddle afterward. Good luck. |

| Re: One for the ladies, have you ever had a.... i would concur with having a friend for a cuddle afterwards. i went through first time of testing alone cos my dad was terminally ill at the time and i didn't want to worry anyone; the second i was broken up from boyfriend briefly, and again didn't want to worry friends. was a stupid move, a cuddle would have been awesome in both circumstances.
