I don't really understand why it's his most famous, I much preferred The Rainbow.

This book sounds remarkably like the sort of thing I should be reading - is it any good?

Aye it's pretty decent. Philo is the head of the influential Glasgow Uni Media Group (and my disertation supervisor) and Miller is the head of Sociology at Strathclyde. Starts of with an analysis of the state of British society post-Thatcher, then goes on the attack at social science's toothlessness in properly analysing these changes. Argues against post-modernist allthatissolidmeltsintoair approaches saying they are disempowering etc: critizises Derrida, Baudriallard, Barthes, etc.
Then there are some responses (although not rebuttals) by people like Chomsky, Stuart Hall, and a few other (generally) media schollars.

What kinda job d'you have that lets you sit and read the whole time?!

1. Joseph Conrad - Heart of Darkness
2. D. H. Lawrence - The Rainbow
3. Evelyn Waugh - A Handful of Dust
4. James Joyce - A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
5. Evelyn Waugh - The Loved One
6. Philip Pullman - Northern Lights
7. Philip Pullman - The Subtle Knife
8. D. H. Lawrence - Women in Love

9. Ford Madox Ford - The Good Soldier

Amazing. Still, I'm kinda wishing the recommended reading for this term wasn't so unrelentingly bleak.
