It was a great read for someone like me, although he really should have called it "An Utterly Impartial History of England" | I'm reading a John O'Farrell just now, The Best a Man Can Get. Really like the way he writes. Couple of laugh out loud moments, a couple of teary moments.
I'm not a big reader, but I read a couple last year that got me back into it a wee bit

I'm not a big reader, but I read a couple last year that got me back into it a wee bit | Yeah I properly laughed out loud at a couple of bits in this book as well, and I got all emotional reading about the wee boats at Dunkirk. It made me feel borderline patriotic for a couple of minutes there...
The only frustrating thing was it took me SO long to read the book because I was trying to absorb so many new facts - towards the end I totally couldn't be bothered with the jokes any more and just wanted him to get on with it. Still though, good read.

Its quite strange, but i really enjoyed it. I read A Pale View of the HIils by him as well, and enjoyed it. Quote:

This is Your Life is really good as well, if you haven't ready it, I reckon you'd like it.

| Re: Fifty book challenge 2009 Bit late joining the party here. I barely read these days (my literature degree destroyed any enjoyment I have in reading) but I have a little time on my hands now so I'll give this a go. Starting out gently:
1. The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle
2. The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes - Arthur Conan Doyle
3. A Snowball in Hell - Chris Brookmyre (can't believe it took me so long to get round to this!) |

Oaft, that's the Border trilogy done. The first two books are great even as standalone novels, but the third was my favourite. It brought everything together and turned everything on it's head and left me thinking about life in a whole new way. Emotionally drained! |
