| On the Road - Jack Kerouac On the Road by Jack Kerouac
This book follows an American college student named Sal Paradise who hitchhikes across America during his summer vacations from college. The time span of the book is about three years and deals only with the summers in question. Another prominent character in the boy is Sal’s friend Dean Moriarty with whom Sal mainly ends up travelling with.
According to the blurb on the back of the book, parts of the book are autobiographical which makes it even more interesting to read. As I was reading this book waiting for my flight at Glasgow Airport it seemed quite an appropriate book to be reading at the time.
I simply couldn’t put it down and just wanted to keep reading. It made me want to grab a group of my mates and hitchhike across Scotland. Doesn’t have quite the same ring to it does it? However Kerouac doesn’t make the idea romantic/glamorous or indeed that appealing. The book vividly describes events such as an angry mob chasing Sal and Dean out of town and having no money to buy food.
As this book seems to be about is a group of friends going out, doing what they want and having a damn good time doing so. Surprisingly simple idea but probably an idea all of us have experienced.
