I really enjoyed the film, but then, I saw it before I read the book and haven't seen it since. I thought the film was really beautiful. Though the book is just wonderful. Though what confused me was the title....lux wasnt a virgin.

My girlfriend bought me this book as she thought it was beautiful and that I should read it...

I tried and tried and got 3/4 through before I decided once and for all that it was absolute wishy washy pap...

Not to be defeated she decided to hire the video as she knows how crap my attention span is so TV is more likely to get through to me...but alas it was not to happen...I fell asleep at the same point in the film as I stopped reading the book so I still dont know what happens at the end and I dont fucking care either...

The only good bit of the film was when the youngest one gets impaled on the fence and that doesn't quite have the same effect in the book....

So aye total pap...and girly pap at that!

I didn´t like this book at all. I read it some time ago now, but if I remember rightly it bored me and was repeatative. I had wanted to see the film, but after reading the book I decided not to bother.

i thought that book was totally amazin i read it last summer when i was on holiday and i couldnt put it down it was totally amazin. i finished then turned right back to the start and read it again. i came home form turkey and got the film out. and watching it. and thouhgt it was a terrible effort at protraying the book. the book was unforgetable. and the film was very much forgetable.

although I liked it I was left thinking 'what was the point in that'
That's a bit like what I thought. I read it a few years ago, and I mostly loved it, the whole book was really poignant, but there was no closure. I understand that that's a popular modern device, leaving things unexplained, bring the reader into the fiction, etc. but I just didn't get what the catalyst was for the girls' decsent and eventual deaths... why?

It may be that the reason is irrelevant, the point being to read and appreciate what is there, rather than what isn't (and it is beautifully done) but I just kept thinking after but why, why, why?

*note to self* must remember to look at this thread more often, so's to take part in discussions while they're actually happening.

the virgin suicides is a truly awful film, they couldn't have made it more dull if they tried. It is tedious. I can't comment on the book as I haven't read it but I would say that it is probably better than the film because to be blunt - you can't get much worse. Unless you choose to watch 'Ghost world' which is of equal tedium.

Holly your taste leaves a lot to be desired (even thought you love almost every other film I love) Ghost World is sheer genius and The Virgin Suicides, even though the film does the book to justice at all is still a very good film.

The book was truly amazing. Couldn't put it down. I liked the fact you were left open to what actually happened...or more why it happened. I have to disagree with Nicola in her saying they killed themselves because there sister had. Yes I think that had something to do with it but I don't think that was the reason they did it. With this book there is no telling though, no right or wrong...it's just as the individual reader sees it.

All in all I'd give the book roughly 6.5 out of 10.

I did this book for my RPR when i was school..and i kinda enjoyed reading it..the film came out just as i had handed it in... which was annoying...but i thought the film was a fairly good adaption of the book but my advice to anyone who hears about it..to read the book rather than watch the film..although it does have the lovely...josh harnett...

you can't even compare 'ghost world' to 'the virgin suicides'.
ghost world is on a completely different level and is a far superior film.
