most of the people who voted for most likely haven't even read the book and only voted for it because of the movies...the top five were disappointing too, there are much better books than the ones in the top five...
Best book ever, My arse.
A cancer of a trilogy.
Most of it is descriptions of trees, people eating and dumb songs.
I hate Tolkien.

I just finished the trilogy and loved them.

I liked the books, but the songs annoy the holy hell out of me.
I didn't read the songs![]()

Nor did I, after making the mistake of reading the first one, which left me cursing Tolkien for taking a few minutes of my life that I'd never get back.
i cant even estimate how many times ive read it, and i still dont think ive read all the songs.
I can't stand it, never have.
I blame LOTR for the sad state of most fantasy fiction. Sad endless bland parent friendly trilogies.
Moorcock's where it's at.
I've actually got some Moorcock in my 'to be read' pile. Knowing me, it'll be March or April before I egt round to it.
i dunno, i tend to blame publishers that publish crap trilogies in an attemot to cash in on the popularity of lord of the rings and the writers who dont realise that theyre second rate hacks, convinced the kore pages they have in their magnus opus of drivelt eh better recieved itll be.
Only ever been able to stomach his Elric stuff....everything else has just been way over my head.Originally Posted by Staley

Get my collection down to a more manageable and readable size![]()
I started on fantasy years ago when I was a lad and since moved onto hard boiled crime fiction as the genre is just far too fluffy and ladedah.
I'm currently reading LOTR and so far I've skipped pretty much every song. I read Tom Bombadil's though, cos he's cool.
bout the only other one worth reading really is the one aragorn sings about beren and luthienOriginally Posted by GreatKingRat
