Books about maths

it seems a bit strange, but i got this book out the library called The Mathematics Of Everyday Life, and its pure interesting as fuck. Its just a lot of basic everyday examples of more complex stuff, the books good, content wise, but its whole presentation is shite. Thats not the point but, just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other books like it.

Re: Books about maths

It's slightly related, and usually in the same section of the bookstore, but try The Code Book by Simon Singh - or Fermat's Enigma (also by Mr. Singh)

The Code Book is a breakdown of cryptography over the years (and since cryptography generally just turns into number crunching, a hefty amount of math is utilized)

Fermat's Enigma tells the tale of the professor that solved Fermat's last theorem, something that stumped the mathematical world for about 3 centuries.

If those are too heady, I'd also recommend anything that dives into Fibonacci sequences and how they relate to life, the universe, and everything...such as Fascinating Fibonaccis: Mystery and Magic in Numbers (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...054197-7096106)
Fibonacci (otherwise known as the Golden Ratio, or Golden Mean) has been respected for centuries by many different cultures. in Colin Wilson and Rand Flem-Ath's "The Atlantis Blueprint: Unlocking the Ancient Mysteries of a Long-Lost Civilization" there is much discussion and pointing out of how often the Fibonacci sequence occurs through patterns of religious sites in England, Scotland, South America, and Egypt

Re: Books about maths

I read about encryption for fun, sad neh? Actually, The Code Book's a pretty good read, not entirely too ethereal, and usually grounded in a history tale or three (such as breaking Germany's Enigma encryption scheme that was protecting U-Boats in WW2)
It's only when it gets to RSA/DEC and PGP that it starts going over folks heads mathematically.

Although, if you're fascinated by The Code Book, I recommend reading some popular fiction afterwards, in the form of Neal Stephenson's "The Cryptonomicon"

Re: Books about maths

I still haven't got round to reading The Code Book yet, must do so soon.

And fans of Tool may wish to note that the song 'Lateralus' is full of fibonacci stuff.
