Re: Dan Brown sued

Er, wait a sec.

Guy writes a story based on a non-fiction work. People complain.

Get real.

Next up, Disney sued by BBC News!

Aye Christian Bale is amazing in American Psycho - what a class film - and he puts a lot of dedication into his roles, losing weight for the Machinist and bulking up for Batman.

Re: Dan Brown sued

Right, so we'll be waiting for Virgil to sue Dante next? Burns to take McDiarmid to court? Or perhaps even Shakespeare will rise from the dead and sue just about every author whose work is a part of the English Literature canon.

I'm not impressed by Dan Brown's material at all, I think it's thought-provoking only for those who've been brought up on a diet of de-caff lattes and Hello! magazines, but at the same time I believe that referencing or even blatantly "stealing" concepts within the realms of art is a natural part of the creative process. Sadly Western society is often too hung up on it's own values of pragmatism, objectivism, and the idea that one can be truly independent and original, when it is much more likely that we draw our identities from a collective pool (both artistically and socially) - that this case could hold any ground is endemic of the fact.

Of course, I won't be crying my eyes out if Mr. Brown loses a few quid from his pocket. I just thought that Umberto Eco (author of Foucault's Pendulum) would have a much better case for suing than Baigent and Leigh.

(Yes, I am aware this post is about a month too late).

All out of copyright, my boy. I could write Hamlet word-for-word and there's nothing anyone could do about it.

Hm. I might be in breech of something if I said it was mine, but then all those examples aren't word-for-word(Even Dante made light of how he was unoriginal by having Virgil as his guide) or anything.

I'd imagine Brown has the sense, or at very least the marketing savvy, not to copy word-for-word. It just seems as if the law suit is borne out of Baigent and Leigh's contempt for being used as reference points, which is a bit childish if nothing else.

Re: Dan Brown sued

I don't think the Da Vinci code is a bad book, but I don't think Dan Brown's a great author either. He's got the ability to write a page turner, but he's got no particular defining style. Also, all of the main characters in his books seem to be the exact same two dimensional people, that aren't really all that likeable to be honest.

As for Christian Bale, I think he's severely underrated aswell. Fantastic actor.

Unwanted tourism in Scotland? That sounds incongruous. But anyway, yeah 'The Da Vinici Code' was alright. Read it when I couldn't sleep on a flight to LA. It's not really surprising that the theme is ripped off and I doubt if the two chaps who are suing were the first to explore this theory either. Doesn't take away the fact that it's a decent book.

'Digital Fortress' however was toilet paper.

Re: Dan Brown sued

The people of Roslin are not receiving "unwanted tourism", in fact, they appear to be revelling in it.

Rosslyn chapel requires substantial restoration work and the influx of tourists has become a lifeline for this gorgeous building. I was up there a couple of months back and spoke to several locals about its sudden popularity, they believe that if it brings money to the village then it's no bad thing.

Re: Dan Brown sued

As Ruth says its anything but unwanted.

The folk that run the place have even went as far as denying people the access to scan the grounds to see if something really is there just in case they find nothing (well thats my theory anyway )

The place has been in a bad state for a long time and despite several attempts hasnt been preserved very well. This extra cash coming allows them to do it properly this time....hopefully.

I still find the history of it curious and despite it being knocked as all fake theres still some things about it that experts just cant explain properly...such as one of the outer walls being a complete folly, the fact it was never built as a church/chapel in the first place or if it was it was never consecrated until much later and the north american corn on the wall that dates back to before the USA was officially 'discovered'
