2. Cyberpunk - Bruce Bethke (in two minds wether to include this or not as its a short story rather than a book/novel...i'll decide later on in the year in case I get nowhere near the 50 books  )

Good as far as comic thrillers go with some of his writing getting downright surreal, but if you read a few of his booksyou start to notice a lot of similarity and reusing of ideas.....he seems to have a real thing for peoples hands getting infected and rotting.....Mark remarked that hes Just like Terry Pratchett in this way.
Broadly Id say read at least one of them
