A few quick pointers so that people don't read something which may result in them having an episode (or ten!) ruined for them.

It's recommended that if you are making a thread then you roughly try and have the name of it linked to an episode number so that someone who hasn't seen that far doesn't click it by accident. That way we can avoid having to spoiler tag everything and all manners of uglyness.

Along the lines of:

"Season X: Episode Y."

Is what I'd recommend since it looks tidy in the sub-forum and clearly states where it falls into the series & people not that far don't have to click it.

If this way of having things is suck to then there is less need for HUGE annoying spoiler warnings in thread titles, and hide tags in thread.

Alternatively if it's a character or a main theme in the series such as "The Monster" or "The Hatch", then label them as such and make sure you use the hide tags to hide anything which could ruin something for someone.

What about general things that span more than an episode - discussing a character?

it's not that straight forward.

Threads for the main characters would mean using spoiler text in them, imo. Only way it could be done.

The same logic should apply to other things like the foot. Who's to say they're only gonna feature in the season 2 finale?

It didn't appear before the finale though. Thus no one is going to click on it who hasn't seen up to that point.

It's a whole reference thing though, should discussion of "The Hatch" be labelled for S01E20 or whatever?
It's still current.

I think a common sense approach rather than labelling everything furiously should work.

"The Hatch: S01E20+"

That'd have the theme for the thread and when it is first encountered so people before then don't end up with any spoilers in their face.

UK & US Lost Forums? Fair enough a lot of stuff would probably be repeated, but there are a lot of folk that are ahead with the show, and then there are those that are still almost a season behind.

"The Hatch" and inside the post spoiler text for anything more recent than the UK.

Aye, that's probably the best idea. Same plan for character threads or threads on "The Monster" or "The Foundation" etc.

I think it's all you can really do without pigeon-holing things too much.

Trying to factor in people who have never seen the show at all and are starting Season 1 just now would just be too tricky I think.

I still reckon simply having one thread per episode would work best - With those of us who HAVE seen further on than others just not mentioning things that take place after the end of the episode named in the thread we're in.
