Re: Season 4: Episode 9.

Meh I wasn't enthralled, I blame the gap. When is Dr Who gonna land on the island, he would blatantly end up there at some point... Maybe at the end of the series, that's the only way they can tie it up surely? Oh it was all down to aliens, Dr Who saves the world, the end.

Re: Season 4: Episode 9.

Ben definitely comes to the desert freezing cold - there's frost over his face and his breath is icy. Around his wound, on the parka, is some ice, but that could be sand. It's hard to tell.

Sand or snow?

For anyone curious, the gist of the Bedouin conversation was 'who is this guy, does he have papers?' 'there are no footsteps!' 'well he didn't come from the sky!'

I wonder why Charles said it was his island first, but needed help getting to it. I also don't understand why, given this information, he'd fake the crash? I got the feeling he faked it to stop anyone else from looking for/accidentally finding the island while looking for the real crash, but this doesn't make sense because Charles sponsored different contests around the Pacific, so he did get people to actively (but unknowingly) look for it. On the other hand, why would Ben fake the crash at all? Staging it so far away from where it could've rationally crashed is like holding up a flag for Charles that says, "yup, the island took the plane, come and find us!" So essentially Charles would have confirmed knowledge that the plane didn't just crash in the pacific ocean somewhere (these things do happen), but it actually did make it to the island.

It was really cool the way Charles and Ben insisted on using the other person's full name, almost like an insult. It seemed like a tactic to maintain power over the other party, sort of saying, 'I know your full name; I know you', the way a mother, when really pissed off, would use her kid's full name when yelling at them.

This is really messing with my head. I honestly can't decide who's the bad guy here between Ben and Widmore.

For those of you who follow the podcasts and whatnot - was there a connection between Widmore and the Dharma initiative? I've forgotten more than I remember about Lost.

Aye, there are loads of links between the Widmore Corporation and the Hanso Foundation. The largest being that the Hanso Foundation is described as being located on the 42nd floor of the Widmore Building in New York City. Loads more links can be found in the book, "Bad Twin."

By podcasts I take it you mean the Lost Experience that ran for weeks that was interactive through websites etc? From that we know that the Widmore Corporation is mentioned on Thomas Werner Mittelwerk's answer phone on the Hanso phone line alongside Paik Heavy Industries. So the three are definitely linked once more.

Re: Season 4: Episode 9.

Cross-posted from here, this may give further clues to what big smokey is.
Quote:
The hieroglyphics printed on the door to Ben's secret underground lair are the second instance of hieroglyphics on the island. Except this time they are part of the island's ancient heritage rather than a countdown clock. But what do they mean?

Note: When analyzing hieroglyphics there are a few things to remember they can be read from any direction (such as down-up, up-down, left-right, or right-left), that there are no spaces in hieroglyphics (everything runs together), and the same symbol can be read as many different phrases or ideas.

Top Line - "to summon", "time to summon" or "to summon time"

In this instance, there is one word that can help us determine the way the hieroglyphic is meant to be read and unfortunately it is the only crystal clear word here.

nas - "to summon" or "to call"

Nas or "to summon" is represented by the man with the outstretched arm (see diagram above) and the reason why it is so clear is the simple fact that the word is a determinative. A determinative is the way that the Egyptians associated meaning and pronunciations to their words.

So, "to summon" by itself would appear as n (the squiggle) on top, with a and s underneath, followed by the picture of the man holding his arm over something. This may mean that the hieroglyphics here are meant to be read from right to left, but it is impossible to say which is the right direction.

ra - "time"

The word "time" is an ideograph (hieroglyphic meant to express an idea), and is represented by a circle with a dot in the middle of it. Since the hieroglyphic is somewhat obscured, we can only guess that this is what was meant to be shown.

Second Line - "Protection", "Power" or "Strength"

The second line does not have anything that could determine direction and is a combination of ideographs and phonetics. There are an infinite amount of possibilities as to what this line means, so I'll give the phonetic and idea of each hieroglyphic and let you theorize away!

hen - "master" or "priest"

Hen as a noun would translate roughly into master, but could be easily be seen as priest. This could mean the chamber is for holy men only or could be referring to the one who is control of this island?

"man with weapon" - "power", "strength", or "protection"

The second line would seem to be anchored by this hieroglyphic, because the phrase "to summon protection" would make the most sense. After Ben left the door covered in soot, smokey was right behind him. Is the chambers purpose to summon smokey?

"container" or "stone container"

This hieroglyphic is the most confusing, could this mean that summoning smokey involves some kind of container?

anx - "life"

This symbol is not an hieroglyphic, but there is a hieroglyphic extremely similar to it. The anx hieroglyphic is a cross much like the one here, but has a looped top. Again this seems to be referring to the ritual that would summon smokey, maybe giving him life or a sacrifice of life is needed to summon him?

The Whole Enchilada - "To summon protection"

The simplest translation of these hieroglyphics is "to summon protection", but there are almost endless ways they can be translated. Here are a few to get those theories flowing:

"Time to summon strength"

"To summon time protection" or "To summon time power"

"Time summons the power of life"

Ah, I just mentioned the Lost Experience because it has more connections between Widmore and Hanso/Dharma. The actual podcasts haven't mentioned that much with regards to Widmore/The Widmore corporation and their actual connection to the Hanso Foundation in comparison and from memory the closest they got to it was putting Widmore Foundation together with the balloon that crash-landed on the island (the identity of the man that Ben Stole, etc) and another company in the US that was then connected to the videos from the Lost Experience of the girl investigating the Hanso Foundation since she mentioned having worked for Hanso Foundation and another company that also tied in.

I should be more specific, but.. well, my memory isn't that good.
