| AN Chess Tournament I've been approached in recent weeks/months by 3 people from here about meeting up for a game of chess. I also already have played (sort of) with a fourth, and I know a fifth does play (through attempted online cheating - I'm naming no one). So the thought occurs of some form of tourney.
Would anyone be up for it and if so do you have any suggestions as to organisation? I'm happy for it to be over the board or via email/MSN/the internet in general - I moderate an email server which would actually be perfect for it (due to invitation only tournaments) but unfortunately you have to cough up the $20 for full membership to play in tournaments these days, so that's hardly suitable.
Trying to get people free on the same day and able to meet in the same place might make an over the board set up hard, though obviously that's definitely one idea. If through the internet the time limits can be longer, going into days rather than minutes, although they can obviously be short as well. A free site could easily be set up to record the moves to save a need for lots of chessboads if that's a desired option.
Basically I'm just wondering (a) would anyone else fancy it and (b) do you have any ideas/preferences as to arrangements (inc. time limits, location(s), format, etc)

| Re: AN Chess Tournament I would do this, but it must strictly be IRL or else I can't start punching folk when I'm losing and there's just no point. Pete (the real one), might be up for this as well, I taught him how to play chess when we went to Liverpool last month and he became borderline obsessed with it.

| Re: AN Chess Tournament I used to play ages ago and I really enjoyed it. During breaks from school we'd all head up to Costa Coffee, which had game boards inlaid in a few of the table, and we'd sit there and play chess all arfternoon. Unfortunately, very few of my friends in Glasgow know how to play chess, and even fewer of them actually *want* to.
Does anyone know if any of the Costa's in Glasgow actually have these tables? If it worked out I've got a flat in the city centre, and I wouldn't really mind having people round if needs be to watch some hard core pawn action. I'm busy til after my exams, but if we can arrange a get together and find somewhere with boards/would let us play then I'm in.

| Re: AN Chess Tournament Ye see, if you could guarantee the weather, a picanic type deal in a park at the weekend would be purfect for a leisurely few games of chess.

| Re: AN Chess Tournament OR Alternative Nation Chess on a giant chess board using real forumers. When a piece gets taken you get to punch that person in the face.
I like this idea a lot.

| Re: AN Chess Tournament The whole point of the thread is for suggestions as to how to do this, so alcohol is a possibility although I'll be staying sober as I'm liable to take my games deadly seriously - I'm notoriously difficult to beat at longer time limits if I'm genuinely concentrating. I'm well known for playing moves with little/no though and rapid play at a 20 mins for all moves time limit is a favourite of mine, but at more conventional time limits such as 40 moves in an hour and a half followed by an extra 30 minutes for the remaining moves I do take my time, I do concentrate, and I do become very difficult to break defensively - unbeaten in the Scottish League at such time limits because of that (ok, so I only played 3 games, but they were all against far higher rated opposition)
