Nicaragua bans abortion even when the mother's life is at risk

Woman seeking abortions and doctors performing them will face sentences of up to 30 years even, and I'm going to repeat this out of sheer astonishment, if the mother's life is at risk.

Hardly unexpected though. I'm quite disgusted by this but not surprised in the slightest.

^ What Vonnie said.

All this will do is cause a rise in back-street abortions, surely? And ‘oh, sadly the foetus didn't survive’.

Demand doesn't go away when you make something illegal, especially not something that's fairly crucial to have available in some circumstances.

You know a couple of the American states are going this way? The midwestern ones, I forget which. Shocking.

The entire USA will end up the same if Dubya gets re-elected. His policy has already affected millions of dollars of charity funding with the Mexico City Policy (aka The Global Gag Rule) which he reinstated on his first day as President.

Did the partial birth abortion ban become law as well? I'm pretty sure it did.

He can't be re-elected, thankfully.

Best Policy Ever. I think we should have instituted that here.

Possible way out: If the mother's life is at risk, then go for an early delivery. If medical science can't yet keep a 15 week old foetus alive outside the mother's womb, then so be it.

Would that work in the case of ectopic pregnancies? I'm not too up on my reproduction knowledge...

Fucking outrageous though.

Les - my bad

Ectopic pregnancy usually requires the entire fallopian tube to be removed, so no. Generally an ectopic pregnancy won't make it past 10 weeks before rupturing.

So, essentially, there's no way women with ectopic pregancies can get out of this? Its basically a death sentance for them?

With my understanding, an ectopic pregnancy is one which develops outside the uterus, almost always in the fallopian tube and they are never viable so if the hospital refuses to treat an ectopic pregnancy then yeah it's a death sentence.
