Perhaps because (as his name suggests) he may be of arabic extraction... Would this have happened to a non-ethnic student?

I would suppose. And fucking quite right too. |

| Re: Student tazed for not having ID Telling him to stand up with the threat of further tazing (and I think they did when he failed to, too, it was a little hard to tell) demonstrates if nothing else a lack of training, and cops who are lacking in training shouldn't really be permitted anywhere near a tazer. |

| Re: Student tazed for not having ID We desperately need successful prosecutions for this sort of abuse to encourage police persons to act responsibly for their own sakes, since they repeatedly demonstrate that they subjugate the rights of the public far too swiftly. The number of high-profile examples of police escaping the justice they're enforcing so very badly is mind-boggling. Cressida Dick's promotion simply astonsihes me still.
You'd hope that the prevalence of video-camera-phones etc would redress the balance as police become aware they're liable to verifiable scrutiny, but it doesn't yet seem to be helping, just making us more aware of the problem

| Re: Student tazed for not having ID Are they cops or are they campus security? Appaling either way. Even the statement that was added ' was repeatedly stunned with a tazer' - so why THE FUCK did you try and make him stand up after?! |

| US Student Gets Taser'd For Not Having ID http://www.break.com/index/student_g...having_id.html
Another video showing US cops going a tad over the top with their toys.
I reckon that the kid should have taken the hint and complied with their commands right at the begining but at the same time i'm pretty shocked at the lack of power by the cops, there are 3-4 of them vs. one skinny UCLA student, and he's not putting up a huge fight other than a bit of shouting, yet it takes them a good 5 minutes and a number of taser shots to get him under control ( i liked the fact that one of the cops just seemed to say 'stand up, stand up' over and over again, rather than actually doing anything).
In this country it would have taken two cops with any very little public order training less than a minute to get him cuffed and in the back of a van and they wouldn't even touch their batons or CS spray.
dunno if this vid has been posted already, and to be honest the video it's self is a bit pish, but it serves as a wee bit more evidence of the culture gap between here and 'oor there.

Yeah, it is shocking. Amazing that they could be so brazen in front of so many witnesses even it it wasn't being filmed.

Fair point, it think it's safe to say they failed on almost all the requirements of their task.
