I remember being saddened by seeing Carol Vorderman being used to advertise shampoo to lend weight to the sciency bit of the advert. It may or may not have had some loose basis in fact but it's cheap.

Attempting to attach credibility to scientific contentions by using someone who's getting PAID to say lines in an ad is woeful, however solid their credentials.

I was going to post a link to this but I'm paranoid about being accused of crusading.
Anyway, it's an excellent resource. Especially the downloadable leaflet titled "I don't know what to believe..." which is a crash course in flitering out fact from nonsense in mainstream press stories.
