Brings back all sorts of memories for me. The Hindu Times was their other great album as well. They seemed to lose it a bit after Whats The Story but HT put them back on track.
My other favourite first albums (that I can think of right now)
Earth Vs The Wildhearts, Garbages and Catatonias first ones. The titles of which escape me just now. |

| Re: Best debut album ever? I’m a great believer ‘first album good, second album rubbish’ syndrome.
Logically, a band’s debut most often comes from years of work, years of writing, performing, etc. It’s a culmination. The follow up can often be a real letdown because it’s thrown together a hell of a lot more quickly.
That’s a massive generalisation of course, and is only true for something like half the bands out there. A lot of acts work better under pressure and a lot of music owes it’s very soul to being knocked together on a whim. |

| Re: Best debut album ever? kinda true but some acts get better and better. or maybe in the case of oasis just better 'cause i think morning glory is much better than definitely maybe. some people say reggatta de blanc was the best police album but i still love the original for the same reasons you said. what about the pixies? i don't know their first album but if it was as good as doolittle or bossanova then it must be brilliant. jimi hendrix too, electric ladyland was seminal but even though that's bewildering i still love the rawness of are you experienced. likewise i can't imagine the beatles' first album being as good as their latter ones. it is interesting thinking about the evolvement of bands. like some people say pink floyd were much better with syd barret but most people like their stuff after him, kinda similar with peter gabriel and genesis
talking about metal though, i think system of a down will be regarded as one of the best bands of all time. lol the amount of stuff they put into their tunes

| Re: Best debut album ever? RATM's debut was great, and it might well be the best debut album ever made.
I'll also give a shout out to Iron Maiden's self titled debut, 14 albums later and a lot of people still consider it their best. It's hard for us to rate it as highly because we weren't there, 26 years ago who here was really involved in the scene?
Changed the face of metal as the leading light of a new group of bands.

| Re: Best debut album ever? Not saying that I disagree with Rage & G’n’R, but I reckon these few should be considered too: Ramones — Ramones Sex Pistols — Never Mind the Bollocks The Clash — The Clash The Jesus & Mary Chain — Psychocandy De La Soul — Three Feet High & Rising Elastica — Elastica Senser — Stacked Up Chixdiggit! — Chixdiggit!
A fair few ‘self-titled’ records in there. Oh, and we’re all a bit stuck in the rock category, aren’t we? |

Whoa, lots of ‘self-titled’ records in there. | I know I'm going to get my ear chewed off for this but I just don't get the Ramones. They only have one song, they just give it a different name each time. I mean, it's quite good and all but I don't think they deserve the feverish level of adulation that they get.
Never Mind the Bollocks - couple of great tracks. A lot of good ones. Seminal but over-rated. |

| Re: Best debut album ever? I see your point there; the Ramones are a bit of a sacred cow to a lot of folk.
I appreciate their minimalism. There’s nothing wrong with simplicity when it’s done right. I don’t get the appeal of the Ramones over their whole career, but taken as one album on it’s own merits, I think Ramones is pretty flawless. Similarly, I reckon Less Than Jake made two or three cracking modern punk albums, but then made another ten or so that sounded exactly the bloody same. I become bored.
Whilst I’m pondering punk in all it’s forms, I need to add Don’t Turn Away by Face to Face to my list of awesome debuts. |

| Re: Best debut album ever? Placebo- Placebo
yes, WYIM might have been more "accomplished", but for me, Placebo will never top that eyeliner smeared, full o' drugs, "lets get fucked up and then shag", bitchy glam punk vibe of their debut. Sex Positions- Sex Positions
I've yet to hear any contemporary hardcore as good as this. Kate Bush- The Kick Inside
Just the best album she's ever done, in my opinion.
and the obvious:
Pablo Honey
