Nah, Bleach is outshined by what followed it. Great as it may be, Nevermind was better.

Re: Best debut album ever?

I have to disagree, Bleach is an outstanding album. Nevermind is a lot more polished, but lacks the same kind of intensity.

I need that tempered by pop hooks myself. As did the majority of the rest of the world. I find parts of Bleach muddy and unlistenable.

I find parts of Nevermind vacuous and samey. Six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Re: Best debut album ever?

As always. Personally, I wouldn’t be putting either of them up there as ‘greatest records ever made’.

Re: Best debut album ever?

Closest an indie band (by the standard British definition) have come to making a seminal metal record, or vice versa.

Love or loathe, it stands out as undeniably important. No-one could've expected how quickly Nirvana would wither under the spotlight of popularity mind you.

Re: Best debut album ever?

regardless of whether Nevermind is better than Bleach, i believe this thread is about greatest debut albums, so Nirvana's contribution to that particular debate would be Bleach

I’m with you on every part of that except that I’d be talking about Nevermind being the important one, not Bleach … so I wouldn’t drop Nirvana into the debate on greatest debut albums at all.

Anyway, we’re retreading the same ground here.

There must be important/classic debut albums in genres outwith the rock pantheon. We’re missing some tricks here. Disco records? Pop albums, given that pop acts are by nature transient and put it all into their debuts? Hip hop artists?

Re: Best debut album ever?

Already nominated Prodigy and Arab Strap, neither of whose debut albums could be called rock by any stretch of the imagination.

To be honest, I was just sitting alone in my flat on Friday night and stuck on RATMs debut for the first time in years. It struck me what an incredibly accomplished record it is for a debut and how almost every song on it is a classic, not good, not great but a classic.
That's pretty much all the thought that went into this thread. Nostalgia and volume made me temporarily ignorant of the rest of the history of popular music.

Re: Best debut album ever?

This is possibly an unpopular choice, but I reckon Franz Ferdinand are in with a shout for the best debut of recent years. Not ever, but of recent years, yeah.
