Spyamp will be recording a live session for Radio1 sometime in August to go out on Vic Galloway's show a few weeks later. Nice one. |

Spyamp are from Dundee and specialise in gruff, spiky alt.rock. On their brand new album GTI they weave elements of post-hardcore into their stripped-down rock sound, but the effect is definitely more discordant than distorted. They’ve got great skinny/wiry guitars, and while it’s thrillingly-brutal in places, the less-is-more aesthetic becomes a bit wearying over the long-haul. Still, as someone once said: inside every quite-good album there’s a decent EP fighting to get out… Anyway- don’t let me put you off – they’ve supported Biffy Clyro and had a song played on Radio 1 so they’re definitely doing something right. (Oh, and their record label www.petpiranha.com seems quite cool as well.) Judge for yourself. |

Spyamp
(Pet Piranha)
Yet another CD in my recent dolop of indie bands; this lot sound quite a bit like the Smiths fronted by a slightly less camp and whiny singer. There is that familiar jangly guitar so favoured by Johnny Marr and others of his ilk. Yet this lot take that familiar territory and add a bit of modern twist to it. Pop sensibilities are close under the surface as well. No more so than in the shouty vocals on tracks like 'have no names'. The band have toured extensively and are to do a BBC session. This is the debut album from the band who will no doubt be welcomed with open arms by the College indie crowd. A new twist on an ole' form can be quite fun at times. It will be interesting to see where these lads head with their next release. |

Spyamp
GTI
Pet Piranha Records
Take a typical Volkswagen Golf, not a bad car, quite fun to drive and reasonably exciting. However, add those three little letters GTI
to it along with some thrilling enhancements and you get something entirely more exhilarating. This could well be the effect that Scottish rockers Spyamp were hoping for in naming their debut album, released on Pet Piranha Records.
It is true that in some parts, they have achieved this effect by producing a sparky, driving album littered with thumping, gritty rock songs. The
almost suicidally titled (from a reviewers perspective anyway) 'So bad it's not even funny' stands out as one of the stronger tracks, but there are many moments of quality song writing and performance here. The problem is that, as a whole this album feels like a regular Golf.
It is fun at times, practical, solid, yet it lacks that 'Va Va Voom' to make it a revved up classic. Although, with a bit of innovative engineering
and the finding of that extra something, Spyamp could be one to watch for the future.

Reviewer: A music fan from London
Excellent album from 4 early 20yr old boys from Dundee. Having worked on there song writing abilities and playing skills over the past few years this album stands as a shining beacon of their acheivments with their style of music. Stand out songs include the whole album, and superb songs include, Mega-Man, Joy of Bowls, Aquatic Justice and Administer. If you are looking for a new band to listen to and like a good mix of heavy riffs, softer parts, good time signatures and excellent muscianship buy this album, or be destroyed.... |

Spyamp - GTi (Pet Piranha)
Hmmm. Dundee goes DC…
Spyamp are one of approximately 85 million perfectly competent and relatively worthy bands to take the whole post-hardcore template and studiously refashion it into something that, whilst perceptively different to All The Other Bands Of Whom Spyamp Remind These Jaded Ears, can't really be set above or beyond or beneath or in any other bracket than their contemporaries, who seem to multiply at an exponentially quicker rate. Put dismissively, if you like Cursive/Hot Water Music/YourCodeNameIs:Milo/Kids Near Water/Jetplane Landing, you'll probably like this. Whether your hitherto Spyampless life will be enriched/enhanced/affirmed by this earth-shatteringly, spine-tinglingly, jaw-droppingly OK record is another matter…
No, I'm being unduly harsh. 'GTi' is full of full of interesting structures, nice little hooks, clever snippets of momentary inspiration and songs that don't outstay their welcome. One glibly wonders if they could recognise a tune at point blank range, but Spyamp are at the more restrained end of the generic spectrum, and pop thrills are at a premium amidst the studious tempo shifts and 29-chord riffs.
There. I didn't mention Fugazi once. Oh, bugger…
