Originally Posted by poprock I really want to add something to this discussion, but don't know quite what to say... I buy stuff by bands both old and new. I buy a lot of CDs just because I like the artwork and think it's worth a shot. That's how I bought my first Bluetip record, and now I count them as my favourite band. I go to a hell of a lot of gigs and discover new bands that way, usually buying their first EP and then being disappointed when they finally release and album and it doesn't match up.
But I digress.
I still religiously follow older bands that blew me away in a similar fashion in years past. A new Everclear album still gets my juices flowing, anything by the Queers or MTX I rush out and buy...
What gets me is the disposability of a lot of newer music. When I meet someone in a bar and the conversation turns to music, we always seem to bond over the older stuff, never anything new. It has stronger emotional attachments, I guess. Made a new friend the other night in Edinburgh, and we bonded on the bus journey back to Glasgow over a shared love of PWEI, Carter, and Jesus jones. Turns out we were at a lot of the same gigs back in the day. | i can agree with tony here, but I cant really comment about not knowin new bands, the difference is I don't know the trendy bands- like in the cathouse on thursday night bowling for soup came on and the dance floor went mad, but I had no idea who it was that was playing so had to ask folk which is embarressing- well not as embarressing as owning the first 2 albums on import but they used to be a ska band (Hmmm where have I heard that before)
But I usually need to use my friends to tell me about older bands- like sitting in the solids I had no idea what half the songs where playing where, so Posh introduced them to me-and before we went out I was letting him hear skankin' pickle-who are a band that posh would probably never run out and buy a record by, but had a listen to it and thought it was amazing
Now everyone go out and buy the new lightyear record
It's the bee's knees |

| Re: Help me I'm old I aint choosing motley crue over w.a.s.p - i own just as many w.a.s.p albums as motley crue albums.
As for metallica - they should have been put to death after the black album - they were a truely classic band up until f*ckin' 'Load'.
Anyway - everyone knows that the worlds greatest bands are Slayer and AC/DC ...

| Re: Re: Re: Help me I'm old Metallica went from being a classic band up to the black album to a good to average band during load/reload.
Personally think they clawed some of their rep back from garage inc and s&m but most folk would argue. St Anger though just takes the biscuit
As for being old...
