| Help me I'm old Right, when I was a wild teen, I used to talk to all these older people about music and they'd never know anything about any new music... most of them were happy to just listen to the stuff they used to. "How can you let that happen!!!!" I used to exclaim, determined to never lose track of what's new and hot myself.
Fast forward about 10 years...
Sitting here today ripping my CD collection to my PC, I'm looking through all the albums I've bought in the last year or so. The likes of the Wildhearts, Rocket From The Crypt, Therapy? and several more. Every single one of them new albums by bands that I've been into for years... in fact, the last time I bought an album by a band that were completely new to me (and didn't feature members from bands I already liked) was when I got 'Total 13' by the Backyard Babies. That was in 19-fuckin'-98!!!! In fact, the only "new" bands I've got into are local bands, many of whom I only heard because Minus3 played with them.
Man, I suck. |

I don't think I've ever been into new music, so I can't really help. The only decent records by new bands I've bought recently have been the Darkness and Superjoint Ritual. Other than that I buy old stuff and new records by old bands. Sad really...

| Yeah... even when I was younger, I seemed only to get in to "new" bands just to find myself buying the collected works of whatever their influences where. '29x The Pain' was a killer for me.... !!!
Of course, I'm a child of the bastard dour-faced grunge generation, it was probably better that way. Confused my peers no end that I would rather listen to Motorhead than to Pearl Jam... |

| Re: Help me I'm old I really want to add something to this discussion, but don't know quite what to say... I buy stuff by bands both old and new. I buy a lot of CDs just because I like the artwork and think it's worth a shot. That's how I bought my first Bluetip record, and now I count them as my favourite band. I go to a hell of a lot of gigs and discover new bands that way, usually buying their first EP and then being disappointed when they finally release and album and it doesn't match up.
But I digress.
I still religiously follow older bands that blew me away in a similar fashion in years past. A new Everclear album still gets my juices flowing, anything by the Queers or MTX I rush out and buy...
What gets me is the disposability of a lot of newer music. When I meet someone in a bar and the conversation turns to music, we always seem to bond over the older stuff, never anything new. It has stronger emotional attachments, I guess. Made a new friend the other night in Edinburgh, and we bonded on the bus journey back to Glasgow over a shared love of PWEI, Carter, and Jesus jones. Turns out we were at a lot of the same gigs back in the day.

| Tony... I used to do that sort of thing, I'd check out things if I might have just heard mentioned once or twice or just go to every gig I could afford, maybe hear a snippet of something that got my attention, and I too would find a band that I'd completely fall in love with (the band I've got on the stereo just now, Pist. On, for a handy example). Sorta came easier back then, and it was like it was the most important thing in the world. I just don't have the hunger for it anymore.
I think you've hit the nail on the head with that emotional attachment thing, though... I guess that would explain why you'll get folks that just can't get into the new albums of all the bands they were into years ago, too. Like... I had Ozzy on earlier, and to be honest, a large percentage of it is probably shite. But still, it sounded amazing... just reminds me of how fun and exciting seeing an old junkie fire a water gun at 20,000 people in the crowd was, reminds me of being a teenager and everything being fun like that. |

| Re: Re: Re: Help me I'm old Poprock is sooo right older music has more emotion but here's a point someone said to me once (probably myself when stoned) Is it the music or just nostalgia? I was a different more agressive person as a 14 year old than I am now plus the musical climate is competely differently from a few years ago and when I was younger I was never allowed to go to any gigs ever which made me very depressed got me into drugs and bad circles (where people stole my entire MetallicA back catalog except Festhalle and Reload even Junkies have tatse!lol)I have always said if I ever seen TallicA I would never go to another gig and I was right I never have to do that ever again I am now pretty depressed I fell my life is over and I'm only 19!! My life complete fuck sex it obv pointless one question why hasn't the sky fallen down?? Help something is wrong with the world! |
