| Bastard billionaires - Why the Blade Runner DVD is indefinitely delayed. Been doing some digging, as I took to wondering recently what the hell is going on with the Blade Runner S.E. DVD since a few other S.E.s I've been waiting for were finally announced / released ( The Lost Boys, Spaceballs, Heat, The Fifth Element )
Seems some other folks have been thinking along the same lines as my search took but scant seconds
"Turns oot"... Quote: http://www.brmovie.com/BR_Special_Edition.htm
The NY Times (13 DEC 2003) has named names on why the Blade Runner Special Edition 3-DVD set is on hold. It is their report, not mine.
They say, "The avidly awaited, definitive version of Ridley Scott's science-fiction classic, "Blade Runner," won't be out on DVD anytime soon for stranger reasons.
When "Blade Runner" was being shot in the early 1980's, Bud Yorkin, a veteran television comedy producer, and Jerry Perenchio, now the C.E.O. of Univision, were the film's bond-completion guarantors. When the film went over budget, by contract they assumed ownership of the film. Paul Sammon wrote in his book "Future Noir: The Making of `Blade Runner' " that they hated the film, had bitter disputes with Mr. Scott and tried to take it away from him altogether.
The studio release, in 1982, contained superfluous narration and a tacked-on rosy ending. Mr. Scott removed both when he was allowed to make a "director's cut" in 1992, but it was, by his own account, a rush job.
Three years ago, Mr. Scott announced that he was working on a three-disc box set, which would offer all the versions of the film, including a new and polished director's cut with previously unseen footage and scads of bonus features. Then, at the end of 2001, Warner Brothers, which was planning to distribute the discs, pulled the plug. It did so, according to a producer who worked on the project, because Mr. Perenchio gave no sign that he would let them be released.
Mr. Perenchio, speaking through an assistant, had no comment on the situation. (Warner Brothers still sells the 1992 "director's cut," though the picture quality is mediocre.)"
Now, you might already know, or have guessed most, if not all, of the above, but let me say that the project is not dead. We still hope for the possibility that the BR E DVD set will be finished and released in our lifetimes. I expect that writing to Mr Perenchio will do no good and of course is not something this website supports... ~ An address associated with him is:

| Re: Bastard billionaires - Why the Blade Runner DVD is indefinitely delayed. nice
also on a related note i saw "Philip K Dick's Blade Runner" in fopp today.
Annoyed me greatly as PKD never wrote a novel / story with that name.
The book / short story was called "Do androids dream of electric sheep"
The film was called blade runner.
Im sure it was originally a short story but it has been released in book form a lot of times.
EDIT: i dont mind "movie version" books being released but its wrong to say that blade runner was by PKD. It wasn't. |

"DADOES" was reprinted as "Blade Runner" a few times since the movie came out. |

| Re: Bastard billionaires - Why the Blade Runner DVD is indefinitely delayed. Often, they just use print sizes to emphasise a secondary title: Philip K Dick - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. Filmed as Blade Runner
Same as the 'Stephen King writing as Richard Bachman' crap. |

| Re: Bastard billionaires - Why the Blade Runner DVD is indefinitely delayed. And the game's pretty damn good too*.
Especially if you've read the book.
"What precinct are you from?"
"I'm a Blade Runner."
"Sure you are."
Man, I'm going to have to play it again.
"You couldn't possibly have anything I want! These animals are made of the highest quality."
"What a coincidence. So am I."

Also; you'll probably need to install the patch. Shouldn't be too hard to find. |

| Blade Runner: Final Cut Warner Home Video will issue a new remastered director's cut of the classic SF movie Blade Runner in September now that it has cleared up rights issues, followed by a theatrical release of a version promised to be truly director Ridley Scott's final cut, Variety reported. Warner's rights to Blade Runner lapsed a year ago, but the studio has since negotiated a long-term license.
The movie has a troubled history. When Scott ran over budget, completion bond guarantors took control of it and made substantial changes before its 1982 theatrical release, adding a voice-over and a happy ending. That version was replaced by the much better-received director's cut in 1992, but Scott has long been unhappy with it, complaining that he was rushed and unable to give it proper attention.
Scott started working on the final cut version in 2000, but that project was shelved by Warner soon after, apparently because the studio couldn't come to terms with Jerry Perenchio over rights issues.
The restored "director's cut" will debut on home video in September and will remain on sale for only four months, after which time it will be placed on moratorium. Blade Runner: Final Cut will arrive in 2007 for a limited 25th-anniversary theatrical run, followed by a special-edition DVD with the three previous versions offered as alternate viewing. Besides the original theatrical version and director's cut, the expanded international theatrical cut will be included. The set will also contain additional bonus materials. http://www.scifi.com/scifiwire/index...ory=0&id=36328

Totally forgot about this until I went into Fopp and saw a big poster advertising it today.
Perhaps it's because of the shitty recorded-off-of-TV-quality of my recorded-off-the-TV videos, but it looks fucking marvellous.

| Re: Blade Runner: Final Cut I'm resisting the temptation to get the new version, as I have the Director's Cut on DVD, and wanna wait for the uber-edition.
I've waited this long - A while longer can't hurt. |

I've waited this long - A while longer can't hurt. | I'm going to buy everything I can get my hands on.
Also, for the Nth time; Blade Runner the game was utterly excellent. Especially if you've read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and you recognise bits of the book appearing in the game. |
