The story of a young man with a keen sense of smell (Ben Whishaw - Pingu from David Morris' show "Nathan Barley") who apprentices himself to a perfumer (Dustin Hoffman) but quickly takes a turn to the macabre when he seeks to preserve the scent of certain women in perfumes.
Based on the best selling novel, Das Parfum by Patrick Suskind, you should be able to catch Perfume in theatres on Boxing Day 2006...
I've not heard bugger all about this film till the trailer hit, but it looks as if it could be interesting - and Hoffman in his later years keeps striking me as a marvelously fantastic actor for any role.

"out for ages" as in "leaked from the film festivals over the summer" or "actually in british theaters and IMDB just lies as to the release date" or "out to a limited UK release" ?
is this some sort of remake? or is there a similar film in existence from the mid 80s?
it's either that or i'm experiencing a very odd sense of deja vu.
well behaved women seldom make history: work as hard as you play
louder than sirens, louder than bells / sweeter than heaven and hotter than hell
Das Parfum was published in 1985.
Nirvana took inspiration from the book and wrote the song Scentless Apprentice (the boy with keen sense of smell has no smell himself) - Kurt Cobain has gone down in several interviews as stating it's his favourite book
Rammstein's song "Du Riechst So Gut" supposedly also has influences from the novel.
As far as I'm aware of, this is the first film or theatrical adaptation.
i first saw the trailer about 8 months ago, in the cinema, and i downloaded what seems to be a DVD rip (ie perfect quality but no screener signals)
saw this last night. it was a strange cinematic experience. it starts off pretty gross and based on the trailer and stuff, i didn't expect to enjoy it at all but once it gets going, it's really quite good and then at the end it just gets completely ridiculous and turns into a pile of shite. i understand it's based on the book and that's how the book ends, but it really is terrible. i can't believe i'm complaining about a huge orgy, but it's ridiculous

I really want to see this.
The book is amazing.
Aye, the book is shit hot.
Willies.
there were allegedly quite a few directors (including kubrick) who said it couldn't be made into a film so i think i'll have to check the book out and see what the fuss is all about.

Willies.
it seems to be pretty highly regarded and i'm all about the reading these days, so i'll have to give it a look!
Mark E. McKeown: I will NOT be graceful, I will SHOW MY WORKING.
Clear Air Turbulence: The best hardstyle money can buy.
Bunny & The Misshapes: Really?
I thought it was hilarious that during the big orgy bit, even though most of the French women were didiculously dirty they all had immaculate landing strips.
I really didn't like this film.
Having not read the book, during the orgy I assumed he was simply happy, and was, in fact, being killed at that moment. To then realise that scene was actually unfolding was a bit peculiar.
I liked the fairytale aspet. Quite charming, though inconsistent. At no point did I hope he stop or be stopped, and I'm told the book is similarly sympathetic.
Without evil there can be no good, so it must be good to be evil sometimes.
