If MTV are going down the "cast it full of MTV popstars" route then....then.....I really don't know what to say.

Originally Posted by LesMTS Why, WHY are they adding new songs? | i'm a card-carrying member of the "loves big gay musicals" society, and as soundtracks go RHPS is pretty damn hard to fault; there's hundreds of musicals with a couple of good songs, a few with loads of good songs, and then a tiny select group where it's just absolutely right from start to finish and the musical numbers mesh perfectly with the pace, emotional state, narrative etc. it's really, really hard to get it right and for example when they made the film of west side story, they moved one of the songs from where it happens in the stage version (didn't change it, just moved it to a different place in the film) and that caused a commotion.
in this instance they'll doubtless give artists songs based on who they think will help sell the soundtrack, for example.
remaking The Philadelphia Story as High Society and turning it into a musical worked, but i can't immediately think of any other remakes of musicals. in the theatre there are revivals, and obviously shows are re-made every night anyway in a sense (and done by different casts in different countries and different languages... but for example when Avenue Q came to London they worked for months on just tiny updates and local changes - months just to adjust a word here and there).
it's a tall order for this to be anything other than a hopelessly lame, misjudged, inappropriate horid commercial cash-in.

| Re: Rocky Horror Picture Show Remake And yet for some reason we're more kindly disposed toward sequels.
Rocky Horror has brilliant songs, its the only thing that makes me feel even slightly affectionate toward it.
Though I far preferred the sequel, an entire town being a reality TV set seems quite ahead of its time in retrospect. |
