Tivo

Does anyone have a Tivo (digital video recorder)?

What do you think of it?

http://uk.tivo.com for anyone who hasn't heard of it.

Tivo....... what can I say....

Check out the Tivo forums at www.tivocommunity.com

I got the box for 150 (I think they're about 229 in Currys/Dixons etc at the moment) and a lifetime sub for 200 squid......

Its totally unbelievable....... you don't have to put up with tv schedules, you don't have to watch adverts anymore!!! I have bucketloads of season passes set up and some wishlists, it records all the programmes I tell it to (unless the Sky Digital box crashes after channel changes ) and then I watch them when I feel like it

Suggestions are useful too.... I generally set season passes for stuff that I record because I flick through the schedule, look up digiguide etc, but sometimes if I've got a season pass for something on BBC1 and it notices its started showing it on UK Gold, it'll suggest it when its free.....

Fucking top tastic

Excellent Have you got Sky Digital or cable or what?

You get like a 5 day grace period where it all works fine, then you need to either register to pay the tenner a month, or pay the 200 lifetime of the box fee.

Takes a wee while to setup, download guide data, then download 2.5.5 of the software (boxes ship with 1.5.2 which is really buggy old software..... don't be scared at first! You get the upgrade within a day or so)

Telewest at the moment, probably NTL once I move back to Glasgow.

I'll probably pay the £200 for a lifetime subscription.

I hope the legal shit going on the U.S. doesn't make it's way over here. They're after ReplayTV just now but they'll probably go after Tivo next.

OK...... not sure wether you need an adaptor or not.... it depends wether your box takes normal IR or is one of the funny IRDA boxes.... if you need an adaptor, Tivo customer services will sort you out with one I think they are 20 - 30 quid. The CS guys are there till 10 or 11 o'clock at night and are really helpful

hehehehhehehehe........ Basically its a really complicated VCR....

It's a Personal Video Recorder, it records onto hard disc, downloads programme guide data and lets you schedule programmes to record. It also has all sorts of trick play stuff, including 30 second skips so you can blast through adverts really quickly

I tell Tivo what I want to watch and it "Tivo's" it for me.... eg Season Pass - record Simpsons on Sky One and BBC2. This means anytime Simpsons is on and there isn't a higher priority season pass, it gets it.... I can then watch it whenever I feel like, jump through adverts etc, similar to if I'd recorded it myself with a VCR, but without any further intervention, finding tapes etc.

Right, I'll shut up just now.... once I get started on Tivo.....!

About £200 - £250 for the box. Then either a £200 one-off fee or £10/month subscription.

It depends on which quality setting you use, at the lowest I think it's 40 hours.

Not really, although Sky sell a similar product called Sky Plus.

Yep, and it seems pretty neat!

Is there a way to you check how much free space you have left on the drive?

Unfortunately there isn't a free space indicator at the moment....

I believe if you hack it to enable bash shell you can find out from that..... but its a bit scary! (I will get around to hacking eventually.... put in a bigger hard drive and network card etc, but too lazy just now )

General consensus on the forum is to have suggestions enabled and use the amount of suggestions it records for you as an indicator of free space..... suggestions will always be sacrificed in favour of programmes you've asked to record.
