The book is probably one of the most commercially written of Gaiman's works, so it'd probably do well in a market where noone's heard of Gaiman's work (ie - 70% of America)
from moviehole.net
"David Fincher is apparently a lock to direct the big screen adaptation of “American Gods”. The hunt is now on for a screenwriter."
My instincts tell me this cannot work. And if anyone was gonna be touching it i wanted it to e Terry Gilliam.

I wouldn't say it was his most commercialy written, I'd say that was Neverwhere, or Stardust.
As for the movie, well, eeek. It could go either way.

For America, Neverwhere never really worked. It was subculture, even though the DVDs are commercially available from the ubiquitous Wal-Mart.
Nothing wrong with the story, it was perfect for the UK - there were just so many plot elements and background elements that the American public couldn't identify with.
Stardust was definitely an almost by-the-numbers book for the Fantasy fans.
American Gods...it's written in America, using a lot of older American themes (and face it, if yer gonna make a movie these days, it's best to appeal to the Yanks, whether it be with guns and zombies, or with putting all the action in American *coughJohnConstantineisnowaNewYorkercough*)
Whilst encapsulating Norse mythology and other various mythos, the recurring theme is that of the American heartland, and the various tales that get passed down mouth to mouth parent to child over the years. I think it'd likely do well.
However - please for God's sake give us a decent director...Gilliam, obv
I reckon Fincher could pull it off.
Not as well as Gilliam, but then again Fincher might actually stand a chance of getting it made!
It could be worse...
i gilliam pull pull off what was essential a remake of a film that was done entirelty with still pictures and a voiceover (like he did with 12 monkleys) i see no reason why he wpildnt get american gods done.Originally Posted by Rev Scapegoat
