There's some corner of forgotten music that is forever rubbish. The members of NFD have been fighting that corner, largely in the various incarnations of Fields of the Nephilim, for longer than seems reasonable. Keeping the banner flying for clumsy, pedestrian gothic rock, NFD already have a hefty following of people who seemingly lap up that sort of thing. Every minor deviation from formula, every tiny flash of innovation is hailed as a revolution within the genre, which is
barmy madness. There’s nothing at all new on offer, here; if you've never heard it before it's because you haven't been paying attention for the past two decades.
Light My Way trudges along with a soporific beat and growly metal vocals, chorus slotting into place with machine-tooled precision, twee synth cluttering up the background in an attempt to distract the listener from the fact that there's no tune to be found, just a single naff riff and an instantly forgettable chorus.
B-side
Unearthed is five minutes of faffing about that could have been better spent beating disadvantaged children.
This single could have been released at any point in the past twenty years. At no point would it have generated the slightest bit of interest, and it won’t now. Uninspired, insubstantial fluff from people that really ought to know better.
Out now on
Jungle Records.
