Cave's voice looms large out of the mix, underneath a razor of guitar noise is countered by a piano bashed to an inch of its life. Ultimately as commercial as a razorblade pie but a glorious feast for anyone with true soul.
The Hedrons' Heatseeker is in no way anywhere near the same league, sounding like Veruca Salt playing some brash Britpop. It's big shiny lead licks, with the overwhelming pound of feminine rock power with strong forceful vocals, good old Joan Jett touch of just rocking, irrespective of having a fanny. It's passable, bright indie rock that's strong for its generic format.
DJ Shadow's This Time uses an old male style soul vocal and wraps it around gentle funk backing, chilling it out in a style way beyond the cut 'n' paste of Moby's Play and creating a strong song that speaks of regret and broken love but is bolstered by a sense of swaggering self confidence. I'm ignorant of anything else DJ Shadow has ever done I have to admit but this was not the electronic moodscape I'd expected!
Amy Winehouse's You Know I'm No Good would have you believe that it's a gently regretful soul classic, even down to its retro recorded feel but it just leaves the listener cold, it's an empty song that points to roots in styles that gave us some of the great singers that ever sung but Winehouse as competant a vocalist she is, is going down the wrong road. Sultry yet sterile beyond belief. Good trumpet work though.
Jarvis used to be in Pulp of course and Don't Let Him Waste Your Time is the sort of pop and smart lyrical word play that made them so good at their height. A mid paced pop tune with shimmering guitar, Cocker's telling the girls how the story goes with some clever words about 'skinny bitches in hot pants.' He's the supposed word poet that the Arctic Monkeys never will be. It's no Babies but it's a fun tune. | | | |

She will be good | good luck
apparently she turned up steaming to a london gig the other week at 2am, had to go off stage to puke then left.
I like her but I wouldn't buy tickets for her gigs at the moment... |
