Relentless probably want Seth Lakeman to be a poster boy for this scene but what they are left with is not a trail blazer, just a troubadour with a fine line in melodic traditional song writing. Seth Lakeman’s King And Country unlike his previous and wonderful Lady Of The Sea, sounds like a dull retread of British folk singers long dead rather than a bright pop song with folk roots that made Lady Of The Sea such a gorgeous surprise. The lyrical tangent of an English maid in the civil war will make you snore but Seth’s delivery vocals are as competent as ever, even if everything else about it is half baked.
Alkaline Trio’s Hell Yes, is a good burst of slightly frowning pop punk and a good step above in rocking quality compared to My Chemical Romance who also have a single out this week. The track is typical urgent American rock fare, but telling a rather bleak tale, “But I'm better now having a good time, Being selfish, and drunken, and vulgar, and lazy. Bless me dark father I have sinned, I've done it before and I'll do it again.” Bit over wrought but panda eyed teens will lap it up, the rest of us can enjoy the buzz-saw guitars and rapid fire tempo of a slight yet rocking little ditty.
Lady Sovereign is truly a hideous person, resembling Mel C after an accident at Chernobyl. At any rate, her new number Love Me Or Hate Me is well produced but empty bragging, the modern day rap equivalent of a Sham 69 record. That’s a bad thing. | | | |

| Re: Singles: Seth Lakeman, Alkaline Trio, Lady Sovereign Y’know that whole new rave idea? The Klaxons appear to be selling a fair few singles now. Who’d have thought it? |

| Re: Singles: Seth Lakeman, Alkaline Trio, Lady Sovereign There's nothing new and nothing remotely 'rave' in this whole "New rave" thing, they might as well have called it "New Ragtime" for all the sense it would have made. |

| Re: Singles: Seth Lakeman, Alkaline Trio, Lady Sovereign New rave’s a very small media construct anyway. One band only, as far as I can tell. The Klaxons wear flourescent-coloured T-shirts and have bad hair. That clearly is the connection with actual rave. Nobody bothered listening to their music before labelling them.
Anyway, aye. Alkaline Trio always did have a nice line in self-destructive subject matter. It helps with the introspective stuff when the songwriters actually are alcoholics. |

| Re: Singles: Seth Lakeman, Alkaline Trio, Lady Sovereign Were Alkaline Trio just compared to MCR?
They're releasing Remains tommorow which is pretty much a CD/DVD collection of bonus tracks, B-Sides, songs off splits with HWM etc. I got it this morning, pre-orderd, score
