“From Something to Nothing” is the first EP from the Thrice soundalikes Lyu.
Given that the four members of the band are only 16 years old, they’ve had plenty of breaks – they’ve already played live on Kerrang Radio and they are playing this year’s Stockholm Music Festival. If they’re live performance is anything like their performance on this record, I’m really not sure why they are getting so much so young.
The opening song, Mutant X, has little going for it. It’s bland, it’s uninteresting and there is nothing that makes it stand out from the hordes of other MySpace wannabes. This is followed by Tonight, which is possibly the most clichéd post-harcore song I’ve ever heard - perfect for the rock clubs.
The final three tracks, Fallen from Grace, Easily and Hold On, have more promise, but they are ruined by poor production and the immature-sounding vocals, which end up sounding whiny and lacking energy.
Lyu defiantly have talent – or at least the members of Lyu other then the lead singer do – but they need to go and spend a few years honing it. They have a lot of potential to be a great band.
That said, they are 16, they have fringes and they are pretty good looking in an emo sort of way, so no doubt they’ll make themselves a nice bit of cash making mediocre music before they fall into the dustbin of history.
“From Something to Nothing” is released on the 21st of May 20007. More details can be found at
