Evolution is a bit of a strange choice for a first single from a new album.
There are very few albums that I've listened to that I like every song from. Most of the time, if I like an album its because it contains a couple of really good songs, a couple of reasonable songs and a minimum of filler.
Evolution seems like one of those songs that would fit in the second category. Don't get me wrong, the more I listen to this song, the more I like it. However its not the type of song that grabs you by the throat and demands you pay attention. If you only heard this song on the radio once, it's very unlikely you would rush out to buy the new album. Hear it every couple of days on the radio, let it grow on you then there is a much better chance you would.
The song is definitely recognisably Korn, it has their distinctive sound. It is a good song in itself and I would recommend it to anyone, however at the same time I would advise them to listen to it at least a few times before giving up on it if they don't like it straight away. I do like
Evolution but if I was writing a review of the next album, which incidentally wont have a title, I would probably pick out the song as one of my favourites. Having said that though, I would still not pick it as a candidate for a single release, especially the first single from an unreleased album. The song is good, however it's not attention grabbing enough. If you are a Korn fan, you will probably be buying the album anyway and I think you'll like this song. However if you are not sure whether to buy the new album, I'm not convinced that Evolution will be enough to tempt you.
Korn have also posted
Evolution to their Myspace page:
http://www.myspace.com/korn , which being a myspace page, it's an utter mess.
The single
Evolution will be out on Virgin Records on 23rd July on two formats. a limited edition white vinyl with the songs
Evolution and
I Will Protect You and a CD single with
Evolution and the Dave Aude remix of
Evolution. ( I have no idea who he is either). Korn's 8th Studio album (which has no name) will be released on 31st July, also through Virgin Records.
