Severant - EP
Glasgow metal band show there's more to alternative music than floppy fringes and eyeliner.

Severant - EP

You hear a lot of complaints these days about metal losing it’s way, becoming too commercialised, too mainstream, too…soft. Well as long as there are bands like Severant on the scene, it looks like there’s nothing to worry about.

Severant’s as yet untitled EP is a swift kick to the face, with breakneck drums and tight guitar melodies giving way to vocalist Jamie Wilson’s gut-chundering roar, particularly evident on highlight Lost In Darkness. Unlike a whole swathe of metal vocalists these days, Wilson’s screams are more than simply a hoarse groan; infused with pure vitriol, alongside a twin guitar attack so heavy it could make your eyes fall out. Added with Graham McQuiston and Alan Gilmour’s extremely powerful rhythm section, Severant really manage to live up to their claim of being “brutal.” In fact, it’s hard to find a better word to describe the band as you listen to their new EP.

Vengeance shows that there’s more to Severant than just racing through their songs at breakneck speed; it’s almost impossible to not get caught up in it’s really infectious groove…before it rips your face off. The lowest point is probably on Nation when the vocals start to sound a little more Dani Filth than you might like, but this is short-lived and easily forgivable, given the quality of the rest of the songs. You might see more My Chemical Romance than Machine Head on music channels and in magazines these days, but with bands like Severant on the scene, the future looks brutal.

Severant are currently unsigned, see their webpage below for further information.
