For a band who have been around for over a decade and who have had relative success in the charts, this single sounds, well, a little formulaic and as though the soul of the band has disappeared. In July 2006, the band undertook a change of line up when bassist Joe Morgan amicably departed. InMe immediately brought in lead singer, Dave McPherson’s younger brother, Greg, to replace Morgan. Listening to this single, I wonder if this was a good move for such an established band or whether it was just a move to try to keep a band going whose life breath was slipping away.
This single just feels like the band are going through the motions of releasing new material. The CD includes 2 other tracks, Little Mortalities and One For The Road, which sound so similar to other progressive rock bands out there at the moment that this music just fades into the whole genre without having any energy to make them a cut above the rest and, therefore, memorable. Perhaps a year was too soon to establish a new direction with a new bassist? Perhaps the remaining members of the band just don’t cut it now that one of their founding members have left? Whatever it is, the energy that you hope to hear in music just isn’t there and I was left with a feeling of slight disappointment. Slight because this just isn’t music that provokes a strong reaction. If it did, at least I could feel enthusiastic about writing a review.
I want music to make me feel passionate, whether my passion is positive or negative. This is not a single I can feel any kind of emotion about and it’s blandness is it’s downfall. If you want moody lyrics overlaying a generic progressive rock guitar then this might be for you. For me, this was as bland as a Happy Shopper white sliced loaf.
