Is there more to this band than Hollywood actor and heartthrob, Jared Leto? Is it at this point I admit that whilst I knew of 30 Seconds To Mars it was not until about 2 months ago that I even knew Jared Leto was involved in the band? They were a band I had heard of and had heard odd tracks on various MTV stations but had never taken much time to look at the people involved in the band and I certainly hadn’t clocked that this was another example of actor turned singer. So, perhaps, I was able to come to this review with little or no pre-conceived ideas of what I was about to hear.
So, my view? Well, it may well not be popular amongst AN readers, but I enjoyed this, and the other tracks I have subsequently heard whilst researching the band for this review. They are the type of band I enjoy. OK, so their look is a little obvious, and, quite honestly, it would have put me off the band a little if I had seen them all over the press before I had reviewed this track.
And the track itself? It is right slap bang in the heart of emo and I imagine appeals to the same fans who enjoy the likes of Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance. Leto clearly uses his knowledge of the film industry to produce amazing videos and the one for this is a clear homage to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Having seen this and a few other videos by the band I am left to wonder if their videos are more important than the tracks, or perhaps I am being harsh just because the singer is an established actor. Certainly the videos are pretty spectacular, and Leto is certainly worth looking at for many of us.
It would be all too easy to completely dismiss this track primarily because it is an actor who has forayed into music, but to dismiss the band would be a little unfair. Whilst the style is by no means universally liked, this is a band who clearly strives to produce epic songs that are well written and well produced.
This is a track I enjoyed and having taken the time to research the band for this review, this is a band I would like to hear more of. The fact Jared Leto is the singer may be an added bonus when it comes to eye candy, but this has nothing to do with my view of the track. Get past that the singer is an actor and you are left with a band who might be a little too emo for some, but they are enjoyable.
