They Died Too Young - Push Becomes Shove

They Died Too Young's effort Push Becomes Shove starts with the track Hangers Lane which is a crying shame because it nearly made me rip the disc from my CD player and hurl it binwards before reaching for my profanosaurus for new and inventive means of rubbishing it. Personal favourite being a loose translation of a quaint little Germanic phrase - "That makes me feel as if it is appropriate to vomit shite".

But having survived four and a half minutes of overlong "look ma I can pretend I'm in Fugazi" substandard noise the album's second track kicks in. The profanosaurus remains on the shelf and I'm tempted to reach for the thesaurus to discover new and underused superlatives. Third track, I Am A Patriot merely strengthens my resolve and by Lo Siento I am seriosuly considering using the term 'transcendant' (Until of course I realise there are a fair few bands peddling similar wares who do it a lot better - Avast! spring to mind). I also note that as I type, Lo Siento is still grinding along in the background with more angular tomfoolery then a thousand trigonometry textbooks.

Fourth track Levi Tac eventually arrives and you could be forgiven for thinking that At The Drive In had pulled up with it, but I note from the promo blurb accompaning the CD the band seem dissapointingly devoid of afros. Although not quite up to Drive In standards its definatly one of the EP's standout tracks. The second stand out being the very next track Await Instruction which storms along in a manner not entirely disimilar to Million Dead although the guitars are arguably at their least angular here and perhaps border on the anthemic.

EP closer Automaton provides a respite from the angular assualt and provides breathing space before the welcome return of angular guitars and crashing noise.

The EP is good, very good, but badly, badly let down by the first track which is substandard in comparison to the rest, although after listening to it again it doesn't sound as bad in light of the rest of the EP... Still when else am I going to be able to say something makes it appropriate to vomit shite? Not often if I get more They Died Too Young stuff to review I'll wager.

I like it.
