Brooklyn's
Teedo are very obviously fans of 70's icons like
David Bowie,
Marc Bolan and
Brian Eno, at least that's what
You Are My Girl sounds like. It starts like a typical sugar coated pop song, but not quite bubblegum. Even the vocals on the verses sound a bit like a karaoke version of Bolan. But it has one massive problem, keyboardist Saeko Terano's fondness for a sharp, modulating synth sound. The synth hook in question appears all over this track and really will irritate you after a few listens, especially when you realise that the only other synth hook uses the same sharp sound and just as much modulation. Then there is the pace of the track, it is so slow that you could easily believe the band got bored of playing the song long before they recorded it. The drums never change the pace of the track, but the track sounds as if it should change pace at least 3 times. Instead you get a plodding piece of background music, apart from the overbearing synth, that never really seems to do anything exciting. Unfortunate really as you get the feeling that Teedo believe themselves to be exciting. What they really sound like is a wannabe stadium band who's sound would struggle to liven up a small venue like the 13th Note Cafe. And the track is far too long at nearly 6 minutes, especially since the last 45 seconds is virtually silent apart from some backing vocals and studio discussion that the band have insanely thought anyone would want to listen to.
B-side
Shut The Door On The World would have been a better choice for the lead track as it is much dancier, the band doesn't sound quite as bored and it actually shifts gear when it reaches the chorus. Or maybe they could have calmed down the synth and woken the drummer up. Too late anyway, it has been recorded, released and made available for listening/downloading via the bands Myspace page. Teedo? Tedious is a more fitting name.
