[Punk] Zombina And The Skeletones - Glasgow Barfly [11 Apr 08]

Zombina And The Skeletones is just the sort of band name to conjure up a cheesy faux-fifties horror movie psychobilly gig and the last time I saw them play at the Glasgow Barfly they shared the stage with the fake blood & gut's of Karloff and the aptly named Groovie Ghoulies. Could Zombina hold their own as headliners on a non-themed bill?

Openers for the night, Crossfire sounded good right up until they started shouting. Punk vocals have never had a reputation for subtle beauty but some semblance of singing is still required rather than getting the words out as loud as you can. It's a pretty tight performance though but I'm left a little disappointed, it's what I would hope from my punk bands when they're in the studio, on stage I want more attitude, more fuck you, more drunken inability to play instruments and to feel that the bassist is gonna kick my head in...

Being associated with the Psycho scene and being a psycho band are too different things, I know plenty of people with shark fin quiffs but I wouldn't say I was Psycho. The closest I would say for Zombina being Psycho was the night that put on the show was called The Wrecking Pit. They have played with Metal bands, so does that make them a metal?

I thought it was a pretty positive review of your music, it also mentions how you didn't come across as an aggresive/violent skinhead band even if a couple of you did have the costume Tongue in cheek maybe but I didn't think anyone would take me too serious when I said I was diappointed the bassist didn't spit on me...

Also you may want to reconsider "You really want your head kicked in for writing a bad review? Come to the next gig." - does that mean if I came to the next gig I'd be giving it a bad review. I expect you'll play just as good and well as you did at barfly cos I got the impression the band is just really tight, really profesional work attitude to the music rather than fucking around stupid drunken inability to play that makes people think the Sex Pistols were a good band. Which they weren't. Not ever.

The only thing I'd like to point out is that the Retrofrets didn't "sidesweep the headlining band". I asked them to say to people to go watch the Bitchfits because we planned an hour gap between The Retrofrets and Zombina so that people could go see them then come back down for Zombina. (The gap was on the set times posted around the venue)
Just thought I should point that out.

cool, cool - I'm just used to double gigs in one venue when it has been seriously frowned upon by staff & promoters of moving between floors (afterall, you pay for only one...!) and your more likely to get chucked out for sneking in rather than the co-operation between the two gigs.
