Portishead - Third

Portishead have been MIA for a decade now. They appeared from nowhere with their loops, samples, scratching, hip hop influences, jazz influences and a melancholic view of the world. They introduced a lot of people to their more cinematic take on the sound of trip hop, a tag which they and the other Bristol bands were never happy with, whilst simultaneously becoming the soundtrack to many dinner parties. They were also very shy when it came to the press, preferring to shun the limelight as much as possible. You liked them, your parents liked them, advertising executives loved them, stoners liked them, ravers liked them—just about everyone liked them. They released two great studio albums, inspired a host of now defunct imitators, recorded a live album with a full string and horn section and then seemed to vanish. Beth Gibbons (vocals) released a folksy solo album while Adrian Utley (guitar) and Geoff Barrow (producer/instrumentalist) worked on production projects including an album for...

I have to really try to listen to it at some point, I keep putting it on and it totally escapes my notice.

Re: Portishead - Third

To be honest, I've only really listed to Machine Gun properly but the albumn has been playing in the background in work for a few days and I keep catching bits of songs and it all sounds good

Re: Portishead - Third

Album just finished again without me noticing it.

Saw a live video for Machine Gun but its hard not to feel sorry for the poor bored drummer.

Re: Portishead - Third

There was a show on channel 4 last week called Portishead In Portishead where they played 7 or 8 tracks from the album, unfortunately it hasn't appeared on any torrent sites that i've noticed.

It's something I've always been on the lookout for - But Trip Hop / Metal bands are somewhat few and far between.
LOL

Not sure if this is what you want, but try KTL it's Stephen O'Malley (SunnO)))) & Peter Rehberg (Pita), the only way I can describe it is digital doom, they got together to soundtrack a play, but have also produced a few record together as well. But watch you don't mix them up with the eastern European prog metal band.

This video isnt probably the best, but gives you a good idea what to expect

Kraftwerk, Portishead and Prince played the Saturday night, it nearly made up for practically GETTING BUMMED by American border control. I've never been a massive portishead fan but i really enjoyed their set, will probably check out the new album.

Aye, it's fucking awesome. 'We Carry On' is still my favourite though.

Aye, the Portishead curated ATP last year gives a good indication of exactly what they were listening to when they came to record Third. Couple of songs smack of Branca.

Same. Or 'The Rip'...

Album of the year contender either way.
