If you believe his press Robin Auld is the combined Bob Dylan and Jack Kerouac of South Africa, combining cult novels with an earnest acoustic rock career. I’ll take that for granted and concentrate on reviewing his British debut record,
Diamond Of A Day.
Blonde On Blonde it isn’t but the opener
Beautiful Things is a nice slice of sprightly acoustic pop as is the bouncy
Colonel And Me seemingly about Elvis. Ah huh–huh.
I really, really wanted to hate this record but when Auld is offering melancholic sounds such as
Weathered which sounds like Elvis Costello jamming with Morphine in the back room of a dingy bar, I can’t help but dig the sounds. Nothing revolutionary but well worth a listen, more so than David Gray anyway.
