    Pink Punk - Zoo Politics

Who? Yap the former front man for One Minute Silence formed Pink Punk with John Hendicott and vocalist Donna Williams in 2004.

Serve you your majesty? Fuck you your majesty - my bullets have Caesar written all over them. - Down We Go

What? Zoo Politics is the first album. A collection of seminal tracks, not quite songs but not quite spoken word/poetry either.

Bleed for me at least, buy that t-shirt for me at least or can I not compete with Ozzy's monkey children? - Thrill or be Killed

Is it any good? Well that depends, really: are you a strongly right wing American who doesn't like thinking for yourself? Then it's probably a safe bet this isn't for you. If you're generally mainstream then yet again this probably isn't going to float your boat either, it might just shatter some of those safe feelings you have. However if you're interested in thinking for yourself and willing to listen to political poetry, ranting and lecturing about the society you live in put to a backing track with the odd smattering of singing then yeah there’s a good chance you'll think this is great.

No 35, Back and to the left, No 35, Back and to the left - Monkey TV

Eh? Yeah that’s kind of what I thought on initial listen. It's not for everyone and to be honest this needs a good few listens before you manage to absorb most of the lyrics and feelings Pink Punk are trying to convey. The topics aren’t overly original any more and have been done by the punk scene, Michael Moore etc but still this is worth a listen. Course if you listen to it as a whole you'll feel beaten down by the oppression and downright crappyness of society it conveys.

My words will turn your heart into a bright day tomorrow if you let them. Bet your hand in it my friend - Revolution - Do the Right Thing

You mentioned music and singing? I sure did but don't expect a band sound, the music, while it hits at times with chugging guitars and rhythmic drumming, is there as a guide to the point in general and only in a track or two emerges on its own, and the same goes for the singing.

Take what you fucking like; I'm not saying nothing - Yapolitical

So which track's the best? I can't pick one, they all have a point and there's usually at least one lyric that sticks in your mind from each. It's hard to explain but you'd have to listen to get it.

Having had a quick listen to some tracks over on the ppunk.com website, I’d say this is interesting stuff. Not background music at all, something you can only really either concentrate on or switch right off. It’s more hip hop than anything else, somewhere between the most leftfield of hip hop and the most accessible of slam poetry or spoken word. It’s not going to be on Top of the Pops, that’s for sure.

There’s a whiff of Michael Franti in Yap’s delivery, which he self-references by sampling Television, the Drug of a Nation near the beginning of the album. I think he’d like it if we compared this record to beat poetry, but it’s just too straightforward for that, too focused. The beats are slick, if abstract, and the delivery is too perfect, the words too meticulously planned. The beats behind the words remind me of Deadelus, if anyone. It’s leftfield hip hop with an organic feel to it, the beats bubble and squelch rather than hitting and clicking.

Check out the songs on the website—you’re likely to either love this or hate it. If you love it, go buy a copy.

I first heard songs from this album about 8months ago. I still love them.
No it's not an easy album, you arent going to ever sit there with your partner over a candlelit meal, relaxing to this music.
But never for a moment is it trying to do that.

If you want to have your eyes opened a little, be given inspiring, intriguing, philosophical, political, existentialist thought after thought, then i HEAVILY recommend you buy this album.

Each time you hear each song, a new line will spring out and cause you to pause for thought (maybe for days at a time). You'll hear the song differently, react differently. But always be moved.

Many will pass this off as repetitive anti-establishment slurr... I urge you not to be one of them, listen to what the man/band is saying. Think about the thoughts they're throwing at you.Watch the videos on their sites. See them live.

Open your ears, open your eyes and open your mind.

It may not be pretty, it may not be nice...

but as a quote from the man himself, from his former band

"No authority on life but I see what I see
And forgive me but I only do reality "

and he hasnt changed at all!

    Buy the album, and Enjoy.

just be warned, it wont be leaving your cd player for a while!
nor will you want it to

One Minute Silence were generic “Look how angry I am!” twaddle. At least he tried something different this time, even if I did find it boring as all hell.

Repeat until OMS get boring, they were incredible live though, maybe I've got a taste for “Look how angry I am!” twaddle.
