Some things just don't work well in combination. Sushi and chocolate, for example. Soap and hippies. Press releases and the real world. Folk and rock.
Ellenby have decided to try and mix the latter two, with little success. Song after song starts out in a pleasant—if twee—folky jangle, with gorgeous, soaring vocals, then falls to pieces as the drums kick in and everything goes a bit tampon advert. The musicianship is terribly impressive, the singing marvellous, the instrumentation...
horrible.
Closing track
All You Need to Know displays a shred of restraint and clearly benefits from it, being by far the most listenable song on the EP. The other three tracks all seem to follow the same pattern, starting well and then blowing it all on some ill-advised rock crossover attempt. The transition from gentle tunefulness to overwrought cheese will make you scream.
