Tiga - Sexor
Rising Canadian DJ's new record
Published by Charlie Parker
28th February 2006
Tiga - Sexor

This sometime LCD Soundsystem remixer's has just fallen out of a time capsule. Dated beats and bleeps dominate this sluggish record, even the cover versions are caked in dust, Burning Down The House and Down In it?

But first the good stuff, Louder Than A Bomb is a great slice of raved up rap and You Want Me is great camp dance pop. But even then there's tracks wouldn't even be Moby bsides, they're everything you would expect to hear on something ten years ago, not in 2006.

The main problem with Sexor is that it never really gets going, the beats never hit hard or fast enough and the melodies aren't usually there, especially when a song such as Good As Gold is starting to catch your interest you find yourself wauting for something to happen.

And at sixteen tracks being bored is offensive.

www.tiga.ca and his album is out now.

PS. Is that Yuen Biao on the cover?

I agree that it never really gets going, I bought the album on the streangth of his re-mixes, esspecially the Soulwax - E talking mix, but I was really expecting something harder, I don't think its a bad album just didn't live up to what I expected.

Re: Tiga - Sexor

the singles on this album are fucking amazing... i've loved pleasure from the bass for the last 2 years. (did you know it's dedicated to Ivan Smagghe and W. Axle Rose?)

this album was what i expected from tiga... some dancefloor classics... some camp covers and some nonsense.
fair enough some of the tracks aren't too upbeat, but the good outweighs the bad.

I think this review is dead on. It all intro to something that could be. I still like it some how.

Re: Tiga - Sexor

I think it's a little unfair, rather than seeing it as dated I've sort of allowed it to plead retro as some mitigation, a retro approach being a perfectly acceptable facet of electro music when judged well I'd say (the start of Italian Fireflies by Black Strobe sounds like Axel F. ferchrist'sake!)

That said, yeah, I use Louder than a Bomb and Pleasure from the Bass (and Far From Home) as warm-up tracks, not middle of the night stuff... but that's not so much because I think they're less good than tracks I play later: I think music that's anticipatory and feels like it's leading somewhere is perfectly valid in its own right, it doesn't have to "get there" to justify itself: if its mood is leading and unresolved then fine, other records can take up the mantle where Tiga leave off.

Re: Tiga - Sexor

This thread appearing just remined me of how disapointed I was by this album. Thats not to say its a bad album by any means, I just had overly high hopes. I think i'm guilty of believing the hype generated by a certain music weekly. I should know better, at my age.
