The Exploders - The Exploders
Aussie Kink rocks

The Exploders - The Exploders

Sadly left at the bottom of my review stack since February, hairy Australian act the Exploders have on offer twelve tracks of retro fun. The Exploders have the secret of time travel, either that or they actually are a band that does not age, a veritable ’60s power pop outfit, held in stasis since 1963.

Their debut album is a mish-mash of British Invasion rock styles that run from garage rock to psychedelic country strums. It is all more pastiche than rip off though, the first song proper My Country Brain may have a riff that is nothing but a few chords off a Kinks number but they carry it off, just as the Stones did when they ripped off Bo Diddly.

It is all done well, and Fuzz Bomb is a swoony prog waltz that would put a smile on anyone’s face.

Out since Feb, keep track of the band at http://www.theexploders.com.au

Re: The Exploders - The Exploders

has there ever been an original Aussie band? Or are they all "retro"?

Savage Garden? I’ll get me coat …

Actually, for some decent Aussie varieties of grungy punk, check out Blueline Medic and Killing Heidi. Nothing startlingly original, but good, solid stuff.
